@EUCommission I join the others that hope that this is just an extension of the channels and that your presence on ec.social-network.europa.eu and the Fediverse stays
@matteofortini The problem is that politicians and parts of the EU being on W now, don't want to join the Fediverse, e.g. Ursula von der Leyen prefers walled profit-seeking gardens again. Politicians like her seem to have learned nothing about open and public structures.
People may say, I don't need her here. But these politicians urge journalists into the walled gardens because the public has a right to know about their posts.
@EUCommission -
@Gargron @EUCommission we are loyal to you muy liege. you can use passive-aggression to shame the eu commission into endorsing your failing platform. never stop believing that it's other people's fault you aren't where zuckerberg is
@Gargron @EUCommission he can't see this because his instance has me blocked for saying i put my dick in a mastodon plushie. but i believe the spirit behind my words will reach him, on the soul-plane
-
@EUCommission haha
This is a joke!Right?
You don't expect people here to follow you on venture capital funded, forced id upload, welcome to afd Nazis network?? -
A strong Europe needs independent digital spaces.
We believe true digital sovereignty thrives on a competitive, contestable, open ecosystem where diverse platforms co-exist.
Today, we’re expanding our presence to W, the new social media. By being on W, we want to boost alternatives and support all efforts toward a decentralised web.
And we continue to invest into our presence on the Fediverse!

@EUCommission
No thanks. Closed source all of a sudden and with ID verification? They can keep it. -
@Gargron Well, I guess it helps that both Eurosky (which started as one giant GDPR violation and only decided to become 'european' after failing to raise millions for their global platform) and W-Social have a shocking amount of vocal support from a number of politicians that should stay far away from this.
It pains me especially to see members of the European Greens shill for them.
@Pepijn @Gargron @EUCommission
This is "Old Europe" decision-making at work. Old and tired. Neo-liberal "It's all about the economy, baby" shallow-thinking Europe. The Europe where it all revolves around GDP growth, big bizz lobby groups, salivating about Unicorns and EU Big Tech. It is not the Europe where real people truly matter, but where cold metrics matter most.
In a time of momentous geopolitical shifts, we need a fresh New Europe. A European Union that dares to change, and do things that should have been done long ago. We are in times where such change is possible. Times that demand it.
And these shenanigans are examples on how to squander the opportunity that exists today.
New Europe, rise!

@EUCommission It's kind of crazy that Mastodon never got this kind of promotion and endorsement, unlike this 4 month old platform that came out of nowhere.
@Gargron @EUCommission It certainly has smells of either lobbyism (or worse) or digital cluelessness (or worse) …

Run by a handful of private companies? Closed source?.Yeah, right. Won't be using that.
-
@EUCommission how bizarre to be promoting a random VC-funded social network when you've barely put the same effort into promoting Mastodon. This has a shady feeling to it.
@Gina @EUCommission yeah, someone knows something about a big shot, or someone is getting money from all this. The amount of PR is off-putting, especially now they're claiming to go for open source

@EUCommission The fact that something is European doesn't make it automatically good and ethical. We do not need another proprietary and closed platform, which welcomes AFD.
Promoting W is stupid and against the values of the EU.
-
@EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu What the fuck is W?
@julie @EUCommission X but European.

@EUCommission Cheering happily about being deceived by a bunch of grifters is perfectly EU.

@EUCommission What safeguards are there that prevent W from enshitifying?
What prevents W from taking the same path that Twitter did?
Based on their own description:
"It is built by a pan-European team of experienced entrepreneurs and investors from the media, technology, and AI sectors."What safeguards are there to prevent the eventual data-harvest to feed the LLM models, that happened with social mediums such as Reddit?
I don't see any features that make W better than Mastodon
@petrikas @EUCommission None. It’s VC. It’s already been sold.

@EUCommission I’m going to stick with Mastodon. It’s nice to be part of a community that’s a bit offbeat, yet lovely and friendly.
