Interesting topic. I am not old and I am not young .. depending on who you ask. I overall enjoy technology. I do want to share another time the government stepped in and told peeps what to do with tech, but it took a while to get it right.
I am speaking about Broadcast HD Television Stations. Back before they even arrived in stores ( HD TVS) the gov made way for the technology by essentially taking the top 20 markets in the country and had them install HD towers !
Pretty expensive and cool but just one thing, NO HD TVS in the stores for people to buy. NO Joke. I was a broadcast engineer at the time …that’s how I know
Anyway several several years later the TV’s arrived (expensive in the beginning of course) but now dirt cheap.
This LLM stuff and Ai which is nonsense to me has got it all wrong in my opinion.
Releasing stealing software on the public is not cool !!
Look at the HD example … it was slower but much smarter. -
My grandkids (13 and 10) use 'AI' as shorthand for 'garbage' art/film/writing/etc, and the same for every kid in their school.
Good for them. I don't think people disdain AI because it's trendy to do so. I think it's because AI takes zero effort to make, so is synonymous with scams and stupidity.

@futurebird I’m old and I understand the technology - I find it either induces laziness or just has no real use case for the mass market. Or both.
In fact friends and family both older and younger have become more concerned about AI merely because I, the tech nerd that they look to for their tech advice, is not endorsing such things as GenAI…

It's not really true that "the most tech" people have the harshest words for it. Most tech people, including the tech influencers, have no real idea how technology works and are variously enthused by AI.

@futurebird The only people I've personally met who have bought into LLM hype at face value are boomers... and I feel like it's related to that period in the 90s where some folks called the Internet a fad and nobody wants to look that foolish again.
Altho I am starting to wonder if there will still be an Internet in a few decades.

@futurebird It really bugs me when someone I respect technically is a big AI fan.
But "programming" AI is really a form of hacking. You're trying to persuade an LLM to produce the right output. And hacking is really addictive. It's way more fun than project plans, and groups of people working together, and QA. It's a solo effort where you feel like you have a lot of power.
And I think that sucks in a lot of technical people.

@futurebird I think I played with AI when it first came out like it was a toy. I didn't understand about the environmental issues with data centers, or the fact that it's hoped-for profitability is based on its supposed ability to displace millions of white collar workers.
So now I guess it's going to cause a massive economic meltdown and create deadly viruses the moment one gets access to a CRISPR machine. It's too bad it couldn't just be a harmless toy that never did real damage.

They legislated corporations being agents, to allow crime in a corporation suit.
I'm sure our legislators are being lobbied to do the same for LLMs. The lack of prosecution so far confirms this.

My 32 yo bro uses it as a toy. To make funny photos and make it say funny things about his friends. The photos are pretty hilarious tbh so i get the appeal of playing, but i know too much (about the social & environmental affects, not the tech) to use it. He doesn't use it for any kind of business or educational purpose. So theres a contingent of folks who "like" AI but still don't take it seriously. -

@rgulick @futurebird I've heard my daughter's friends use "that's AI" to mean the thing someone asserted is not true - that they're repeating unreliable bullshit.
