      @sorenhave thanks for sharing, I remember readying this at the time, it shocked me to realise that scientists had reached that point.

      I think Dr Marvel recently left NASA because of the attack on science and the changing atmosphere at the organisation.

        @sorenhave I don't disagree with the greater point, but that's not what hope is; she is confusing or conflating hope with optimism.

        Hope & courage is part & parcel of each other, not opposites 👉 https://aeon.co/essays/true-hope-takes-a-hard-look-at-reality-then-makes-a-plan

          @jwcph Interesting piece you shared.

          I will however maintain that you can talk of passive and active hope; the latter being what the Aeon article is about. The passive version is what - I guess - Kate Marvel was tired of being asked about.

          And with her actions (still caring and fighting despite leaving NASA) I think she embodies active hope:

              "I have historically struggled a lot with anger. I don’t let myself feel angry. It feels bad. It’s my least favorite emotion. But I don’t think we solve this without getting mad. I don’t think we rebuild science without getting mad.

              Look, I think spite is actually a great motivation to not give up." 👏

                @sorenhave I think passive hope is the same as optimism, yes - but then, we already have a word for that: Optimism 😁
