@paulschoe @joepie91 Things had gone wrong before AI. Laptops and tablets in classrooms were proven to underperform paper and pencil pre-COVID and therefore pre-AI.
The available distractions were part of the problem, but so far we just do not know how to make software that teaches as effectively as reading and writing does.

@paulschoe When I am learning lines for a play, I find that writing them down on pen and paper helps me retain what I'm saying and doing. The act of writing and processing also gives my brain time to really chew on the words and their meaning.
Totally agree. When learning a new language, it is the combination of writing and verbally repeating that triggers my memory. Typing doesn't have the same effect.

@xs4me2 @paulschoe That risks privileging some particular epistemologies above others because it pushes hard towards words and abstracts when implemented. Experience is important: it includes knowledge not available through words and symbols, and matches the learning needs and potentials of young children. Tools are essential from the very start. Not those horrid electronic tablets, though. Those are all about replacing experience with a thin simulacrum, about fooling us into thinking that we've experienced something when, in fact, all we've had is the cognitive–sensory equivalent of crappy (yet incredibly satisfying) fast food.
I've been fighting with my son's teachers (and indeed my son) about this since the beginning. He's 16 now and has come to realise that I was right all along, and has largely abandoned the digital stuff where he can in favour of handwriting. He's working on his handwriting quite hard now because he's coming to understand that it is not merely a ritual convention, but a cognitive tool for manipulating information.

I’m not that optimistic it would improve the general tenor online directly, but a lot more insults and flame wars would die out almost immediately due to mutual illegibility.
On the broader subject, I got a refurb’d reMarkable tablet from Woot earlier this year, and I use it just for handwriting notes for work. And it’s been way more useful than I ever expected. Expensive luxury, yes absolutely. Also kind of an ADHD crutch (don’t have multiple loose legal pads floating around, just the one expensive device with half a dozen digital notebooks).

True,they have been robbing the writing skills from young learners.
Here in Uganda,you cannot find a child at six years when she/he knows how to use a computer and this has not been affecting us -
