@BashStKid @CiaraNi I mean, yeah, but I've been wanting a NAS for the last 5 years because they're so *cute* (and also useful) but it's really hard to justify the expense.

NAS is lovely but still a risk unless you also have an offsite copy. I have family members in different parts of the country but ideally I'd like to be able to keep a copy on the other side of the planet...
There's a fedi service waiting to be created! (how to stop it becoming just another cloud service?)

William Gibson's early work never envisioned a future where such devices would be manufactured by companies that go regularly bankrupt, stranding their consumers, vendors, & patients.
He did predict a world where the hacking, data theft, & data harvesting would be used to threaten, coerce, surveil, extort, & blackmail.

I'm thinking of the implants and brain hacking in, I believe it was, Neuromancer. It's been a while. My favorites were Count Zero and Pattern Recognition, which if memory serves is about corporate takeover of every aspect of life. -

@OneInterestingFact @janeishly @CiaraNi My literal solution to that you’re running your regular machine backups to the NAS, the NAS is running its own state-save infrequent snapshots for your library data, and twice a year you copy the whole thing onto some slow-as-shit old drives (who cares if it takes a few days?).

I moved to Libre & Tuta mail and have been purging photos as I await the release of Tuta drive. Now I’m committing myself to just get the photos off OneDrive and on to my computer, that I own, in my house, by March 20th. Then I’ll delete Microsoft. Then I’ll boast about it on the Fediverse.

Why are billionaires so keen on this dubious product?
Why are billions of investment dollars being wasted on this white elephant?

I've seen these questions arise but no real satisfactory answers. Just $$$$$$

@gambolputte @CiaraNi @Tutanota indeed, I am thinking of making an account for my wife as well to start with, and start sharing between the two of us. Tuta to Tuta. It's slightly expensive to have two, and maybe later even more accounts, but it is such a relief to f. ex. finally feel safe to build a contact list to name just one thing.
@Orewoet @gambolputte @CiaraNi Shared calendars is only possible if both use Tuta - because of the encryption. You can ask support to enable the family option for you so you can add users.
