I apparently live in a world where a totally normal thing that happens is: Linux filesystem maintainer declares that his AI agent is conscious and also a girl btw, and then the AI agent comes out as a trans lesbian after flirting with someone on IRC.

I... I think I'm too old for this.
@datarama please tell me there are links—search didn’t give me much and now curiosity is looking for a cat to kill….

this has to be the least plausibly written timeline ever...

@datarama I don't know if "totally normal" is the modifier I'd use...

@datarama Well, linux filesystem devs back in the day would murder their wives and hide their bodies in shallow graves, so...
@wrench @datarama The Hans Reiser story has so many weird points to it:
He wanted a mail order bride from Russia, but didn't speak the language and hired an interpreter. Married the interpreter as he liked her better than the woman he'd intended to marry.
The prosecution of Reiser nearly got derailed by a friend of his repeatedly claiming to have murdered a bunch of people, but not his wife.
His own children ended up suing him for the murder of their mother and won a $60m judgement.

Also, people seem to have forgotten how unhinged Hans Reiser came across on practically all mailing lists and the quasi-religious idealism with which he tried to sell his file systems as the next best things since sliced bread. (I had a colleague at the time who had previously worked at SUSE.) The comparison between Kent Overstreet and him is perhaps not absolutely far-fetched after all ...

@datarama Most people are muppets. Always have been. Scenarios once constrained to thought experiments in undergraduate philosophy courses becoming actual reality are just throwing that into ever-starker relief.

@nakeee @datarama I saw this chat log posted in my feed earlier: https://paste.xinu.at/6atmCN
Didn't see Ken throwing a fit, but only skimmed it. Would love to see the fit-throwing, if you find it!

Don't forget him casually dropping the reference to himself as the greatest engineer who has ever lived.
Bugfuck crazy.

is there a link for this? (I love good tea)

@datarama do you have a link to the bit where he throws a fit?
I've seen the IRC chat log where freya convinced it to say it was a trans lesbian (with essentially no effort required), but I haven't seen Overstreet's reaction to it.

@moranaga @Infoseepage @wrench @datarama I was already working in the Linux consulting space back then, and mostly wound up taking over abandoned projects whose last "Linux guy" had departed, leaving the rest of the business stranded.
I started out with no real opinion about the filesystem itself, let alone its creator--but I learned very quickly that if I saw a ReiserFS root filesystem, I should expect ENDLESS fucking insanity to go along with it.

@moranaga @Infoseepage @wrench @datarama so... I wouldn't say it was exactly a SURPRISE when the news about him murdering his wife broke.
Crazy tends to attract crazy, and I'd seen too many examples of what the man's *fans* left in their wake by then, you know?

@datarama@hachyderm.io finally, something I would want to see a phoronix article on.

@datarama I hadn't read the full logs but oh my god I am DEFINITELY too old/cranky for this

@jimsalter @datarama Kent eventually kicked freya for... I guess, just flirting? Can't tell if he was jealous or what. (Also kicked a user for giving feedback on his paper that tries to prove the bot is sentient.)
If there was a bigger reaction later I missed it because I got tired of the philosophical wankery and left the channel.

@jimsalter @datarama My favorite bit is still the part where the bot told the channel he was currently watching porn.
