    @luckytran

    And the consumer marketing industry.

    And all of us.

We've been brainwashed to unquestioningly need all this shit for 'convenience' or 'safety' the minute it appears, then we can never give it up, even when it starts to kill us.

Always reminds me of the old saw about how to catch a monkey: put a banana behind a hole a monkey can't get his hand out from while grasping a banana.

We’re a bunch of apes who put ourselves in charge of the planet.

    Such is our collective hubris.

@bsmall2 context is my own personal life. My apartment has code violations with the position of the AC unit, making it put in more heat into my apartment instead of cooling. My electric bill doubled when I bought my own AC's, two of them, and the heat coming into my apartment can beat the cooling of the AC.

It's been over 90f in my home, damaging my skin. My rent benefits programs are not letting me move. I can barely afford food while my montly electric costs almost $1k

@bsmall2 No worries about missing content and replies. Sometimes I wonder if I am out of context myself.

I probably am, I was adjacent in the topic of Acs. oops!

@luckytran So I take you don't drive a car or use any fossil fuels in your daily existence, right? What is "destroying" the planet is people that make blanket statements they are #conditioned to except as fact while they ignore real dangerous issues like #DigitalID and the legal entanglements that come with that in my opinion. How do you say that the #coal burning electric companies have done any wrong? when most of us use #fossilfuels on a daily bases?

@luckytran Correct sentiment, wrong target. Corporations are legal fictions. They have no brains, blood or bones. However the men, and it was almost exclusively men, who provided the brains have known since the mid-1980s that fossil fuels would result in exactly what we are facing now. Those fuckers need to be hunted down and imprisoned. Before they are trotted off to some hell on earth, they must be stripped of every dollar they have and that money should be allocated to disaster recovery in those, oh so many parts of the world that are suffering from climate crisis. Their greedy and irresponsible behaviour deserves the severest punishments we can find for them.

I wonder how the emissions for the power that go into an AC unit compare to the emissions of the rocket that sent Katy Perry into space, or Elon's floating garbage - starlink.

Exactly.. going by your list, the only people not "destroying" the world is North Korea.. But also.. everytime I turn on a light, fly somewhere, even living creatures breathing fresh air and exhaling #Co2 are blamed and that diverts attention away from the real issue.. #Pollution

In everything, we have to work together and focus on real solutions.

@luckytran And america's low-income housing with little protection from the heat outside (mine specifically has a skylight they call energy efficient, what BS) , and the outrageous $800~ I have to pay for electricity used, and it still gets too hot inside, damaging my health.

I fear our species will not survive much longer with the changes made to the environment by profit-hungry murderers.

@BigGangForEvery1 @luckytran Captain Planet was ultimately a very 90's shallow take on environmentalism that put the onus on individuals to fix problems caused by large corporations. It did good in raising general environmental awareness, but shouldn't be looked to for actual action imo. We need taxes on fossils, and goods from countries that lean on cheap fossils, to actually pay their externalities and stop giving them a false financial advantage against renewables.

@luckytran Taxes to account for the free ride they're getting on externalized costs of air pollution and greenhouse emissions. While we're at it, taxes on imported goods proportional to the fossil fuel use of the country they're made in (no point in just shifting fossil fuel use overseas, greenhouse emissions don't care about borders). Get rid of the false financial advantage fossils have by making society cover their impact costs.

@BigGangForEvery1 @luckytran they don't though. Our choice of energy production is what makes it actively worse. Making people cook in 40+C weather because a corporation wants to make an extra buck burning coal to make their product instead of buying a solar panel is not the right answer. Even in the US, with pretty high use of AC, its use accounts for something like 6 or 7% of energy use. It's a drop in the bucket and was never the problem.

@bsmall2 what's got me upset about the AC debate (from what I've seen) is that a lot of folks are punching down at people who use AC, as though we do it for funsies and not out of necessity, or as though we all have control over our home situations. (I rent, live in the subtropical US, our windows don't open, and I'm disabled, I cannot get hot or I will get very sick. It's not like I could fix the insulation or cooling system on the place we rent to be more eco friendly.) Sigh. 😔

@hubertus @luckytran they do. Try'em. Going for legislation first is the quickest way to depower the commoner. Give them something they can actually do. Collectively agree, and then keep your money

@BigGangForEvery1 @luckytran I'd agree if it had a significant impact and wasn't performative. People switching to vegetarian diets, for example, would be far, far more impactful and would directly incentivize companies to move resources away from meat production, which is a huge environmental impact.

Using less energy doesn't necessarily incentivize moving away from fossil fuels... if burning is still cheaper, that's still what they'll do.
