@AbandonedAmerica @tante I still have mine because I am not surrendering the namespace, but I do not use it and I log in once every 3 months or so to note who still thinks it is OK to be over there. In my cohort, it is almost nobody
@AbandonedAmerica @tante there are two categories of person I see:
1. media personalities with an audience several tens of times the size of the fediverse, and
2. people in the community who Have Allegationsit really is the ones you most expect
-
@glyph @AbandonedAmerica same. I kept the handle so nobody could take it, the account is private now though.
-
@AbandonedAmerica @tante oh, yeah, and they’re hoovering up fedi too. I appreciate the protest vote but practically speaking it’s not a defense.
-
I understand the pull to a certain degree, the pain. I walked away from over 30k followers on X which - if like me you have no other anchor of legitimacy - is a big deal. And I met friends there, peers. Twitter did a lot to get me where I am today. But I still wouldn't frequent a Nazi bar.
@tante 21k on fedi. 60% of the way back. and more of those are probably real

@tante Yea same. I had friends there, but honestly most left the moment Elon took control. But spread across everywhere else.

@tante Journalists could use nitter if they cared enough. And if capitalism would even have a place for actual journalism.

@AbandonedAmerica @tante what can I say but “non illegitimi carborundum”

@glyph I try no longer to look at those kinds of numbers TBH. It kinda fucks up your perception of the world.

Yes, because the "AI" folks mostly agree with right wing talking points because that's what the whole idea of "AI" is build upon. That's a bad argument for relegitimizing X.
@tante frankly, is xitter2.0 aka "bluesky" so much better, in that aspect?
Idiots follow hype trends. Shitty "influencers" seek numbers. Idiots follow trends created by "influencers". And the lions, erm, "influencers" stay near where the zebra are.
::breaks into song:: IT'S THE CIRCLE OF.... shit.

@tante I take some pride in following through my announcement to leave when the takeover talks were still ongoing. As a seasoned Tesla hater by profession*, I don't regret leaving.
I still feel though that both the usable part of FOSS and the web at large are shrinking. And that's not just a little inconvenient, but makes the remaining choices much harder than leaving Twitter was

@tante I deleted my account and never looked back. Someone reused my handle and somehow got it permabanned. Never found out what they did.

@tante E.g. take quickshell. I've been building personal dotfiles for a little over a year now and I have something that can rival many of the bigger installments for the functionality that I personally want out of it, imo.
Should I boycott it now that it's funded by omarchy? Sure.
Is it viable for me to either port my stuff to plain Qt or leave it behind just because? Can I go back to something like KDE where the verdict on their AI policy has some bad outlook?
Like I said, only bad choices.

@tante i can't consider friends the people who stayed. if you choose a fascist over everybody else, i can’t trust you. this goes for every asshat i know getting pennies from substack.

@tante I keep thinking about writing up a blog post titled something like "No, we're not all hanging out at the Nazi Bar", with the basic premise of:
Hey, you keep saying you like hanging out at the Nazi Bar because "everyone" is there, but, no, we're not. You are not hearing anyone who's not cool hanging out with Nazis. Continuing to tell me what fun you're having at the Nazi Bar is not a great look. Nor is telling me how Good For Business being seen at that bar is.

@tante I miss twitter. I do not miss X.

This is the reason for slowly backing away from the AI folks.
Don’t turn your back on them though.
