Two pieces of computing history just met.

Commodore is returning to phones, and it chose Jolla's Sailfish OS to do it. The Commodore Callback 8020 is a flip phone built for stepping away from the feed: privacy designed in, your data kept yours.

@jolla when they say "99% of Android apps will run, not on Android", is that generally true statement for all Sailfish OS devices?
Has the compatibility layer truly become so powerful?
I am waiting for my Jolla phone (batch 3) and I am ready to compromise on apps, but if true, it would be great, because I won't need to compromise so much after all.

@s1m0n4 @jolla 3rd-party Sailfish OS devices don't have Google Play services or the Google Play Store; not sure about the new Jolla. This means that non-free, proprietary, closed-source apps can't even be installed unless you jump through hoops and set up microG. Even then, if the app itself depends on the Google Play services, it won't run.

Out of the box, the only Android apps you can get are those on F-Droid. On the other hand, Google can't take F-Droid away from Sailfish OS.

@s1m0n4 @jolla It is pretty true statement for those phones that are supported by Jolla. Community ports don't have Android App Support (=AAS). 99% can be true as there are so many Android apps, but in my experience around 90% works out of the box or with minimal tricks. 95-98% of apps might start to work with tricks or with limited features. Bank and or governmental apps are the worst ones and usually hit or miss. I have 5 working bank/finance apps tho. Ask me anything you want

@marting I had a Jolla phone 10 years ago. Back then we didn't have F-droid apps store. It was nowhere near 99%. I recall this number closer to 5%.
Supporting all F-droid apps would be already enough for me, I suppose.
However Commodore 64 is claiming 99% and I want to understand what are the grounds for such claim.

            @Antti98 thank you 🙏!

I will definitely take advantage of your knowledge and seek your guidance once I am in possession of my Jolla phone.

By chance do you know if the EU login app might work?

@s1m0n4 apps that need direct access to stuff like bluetooth (except of headsets) and nfc are not working.

@s1m0n4 @jolla I haven't heard about that one before and it seems that nobody has yet reported it to the sailfishos.app/ site either. I'm quite swamped so can't promise full test soon, but I try to remember try if it launches without problem. You can try to ask forum.sailfishos.org if anybody has tried.

Is that like EU level ID card?

It's an app allowing to log in the EU candidate portal to postulate for EU competitions (to be hired at the EU Commission) and take the exams.
The exam should happen in autumn.
Worst case, I may be able to configure a different way of log in. I think.

Anyway thank you again! I will post in the forum if issues arise.

@s1m0n4 @marting I am daily driving a Sony Xperia XA2 with Sailfish OS 5.0. All Fdroid apps work, and also most apps from google play (through Aurora Store). The ones that do not work are those heavily reliant on google play service (Strava being the only one I miss). I used to have a Lineage OS phone with the same 'problem'.

@s1m0n4 @jolla so I quickly tried to install it and it launches. But then it complains about missing security pin for Android side. There is workaround in the forum, but unfortunately I don't have time currently to try it out... so this one might be the one which can be used with additional tricks or in worst case no-go 😕

@Antti98 thank you very much! Again, I don't have the device yet, but I will try to make it work. And even if it doesn't, I will have my Italian digital wallet soon and hopefully that will allow me to login to the EU candidate portal too.

@jolla The fact that there's a Meta app on the screen in all the promotional photos makes the privacy wanking look very dishonest.
