📍The eye of a hand sewing needle is larger on one side, than the other.
If you have trouble threading your needle, try turning it around. 🪡🧵

I can’t count how many times knowing this has been helpful!! 👏

@BenitaSkinner This is almost as revelatory as discovering the fuel tank arrow on the dashboard.

Greatest discovery for me since I discovered there are in facts many size and shape of needle (learned to embroider and sew with bad tiny supermarket needles and no sewing shop in sight)

Thanks for making my slippery hands, bad eyesight embroiderer life easier !

                @BenitaSkinner@mastodon.social

(Mumble Mumble) decades - that makes sense - now.

Hmmm. I always find it easier to hold the thread still and put the needle onto it.
                I
am left handed, so don't know if that's why; I tend to do things differently.

Whatever thread, but especially thicker / waxed, flattening it against the side of scissors makes it easier still.
Nice curl plus needle onto thread - every time.

@MichaelPorter It has to do with how needles are made - the ‘eye’ is stamped out, which leaves on side slightly bigger than the other. 🤗💖

Thanks for the eye thing, I got started with needle & thread about 5 I think, it didn't register until you mentioned it, but sometimes twiddling it helps.

@moniquenwerk For most brands, the end that is loose on the spool should be threaded through the eye, and the end that is cut should have the knot.
This prevents knots from happening, while stitching.

Leftie, dyspraxic & RA so I have to find workarounds.

Thanks for the eye thing, I got started with needle & thread about 5 I think, it didn't register until you mentioned it, but sometimes twiddling it helps.

📍The eye of a hand sewing needle is larger on one side, than the other.
If you have trouble threading your needle, try turning it around. 🪡🧵

@BenitaSkinner I’ve been hand quilting for 30 years (and hand sewing for 50). I never knew this! Needle threading while quilting this afternoon was a breeze. Thank you!

@BenitaSkinner But both ends hurt if they puncture you! (Guess who always uses a thimble these days...)
