    @DavidM_yeg @georgetakei

    I’m *embarrassed* when a piece of spinach gets stuck in my teeth and no one tells me.

    I’m *disgusted, horrified and livid* that my government is committing war crimes.

    Words matter.

    Yes. But they're also quite uselessly incapable of expressing some shit. How fucking pissed and sad and yes embarrassed I am would be some of that shit.

      @georgetakei

      Thank you very much for helping to socialize the moniker "Department of War Crimes".
      From this point on I will never refer to Hegseth's DOD using any other name.

                @georgetakei But Hegseth can't commit war crimes all by himself. They only get committed if servicepeople fail in their duty to refuse illegal orders and choose instead to go out and commit the war crimes for him.

                  @georgetakei Heard this morning that people in the Pentagon are now referring to Hegseth as Dumbnamara, a take on Robert McNamara, the secretary of defense during the Vietnam war. McNamara thought we were winning based on quantitative measurements - things like "body counts" - with the risk of focusing on what is easily measured rather than whether the measurements reflect reality.

                    @georgetakei The risk of trying to be quantitative is that, when "management" wants certain numbers to go up, there's a tendency on the part of some individuals to try to report higher numbers. So for things like "body counts", to keep the boss happy, people would count body parts as separate bodies, thereby inflating the numbers. It turned into a classic case of "garbage in, garbage out."

                            @GGMcBG @georgetakei Military personnel, in general, can’t just quit. Officers who’ve met their minimum required service can resign, but enlisted personnel sign up for a particular # of years and can’t leave until that’s up. People who haven’t served seem to think it’s like any other job where you can just walk away, but that’s not true. Even refusing unlawful orders is much more complicated than it seems at first glance, & could send you to Leavenworth.

                                      "And the orange shit-gibbon has NO idea what that means. He is an utter *loser* and needs to be told, every 5 minutes, on live TV, that he's a loser. "

                                      I'd pay good money to see that, even more if I could stream it 24/7.

                                        "The bill was introduced by U.S. Senator Jesse Helms (Republican from North Carolina) and U.S. Representative Tom DeLay (Republican from Texas)..." and was enacted August 2, 2002.

                                        I knew about the law but not the people responsible. Zero surprise seeing these guys' names stuck to it..

                                        I didn't either, but an educated guess might well have seen these names turn up. Especially that creep Jesse Helms.

                                          @Cuchelain

                                          Well said. I understand all that.

                                          But if I knew that my finger was needed to push the button that would blow up a random, unidentified boat in international waters then they'd have to physically hold my finger down on it.

                                          I can sit here right now and say I'd have the courage to refuse such a blatantly illegal order, and I honestly believe that about myself. But I have no way of knowing for sure. And hopefully never will.
