My 9yr old kiddo just fixed his first piece of tech. It was a little portable FM/AM radio with the little dial to manually tune your radio stations: the wheel had gotten stuck and the aerial had become disconnected.
With some hands off encouragement from me, he figured it out himself and got it working. The absolute elation on his face as he realised he'd done a thing - was priceless.
We need more kids to experience this feeling. Fixing their own stuff, taking stuff apart and making them work again. We've lost that in today's society.

@harrybo Different but same, my 13yr-old had a revelation that she can MAKE stories and characters and they can be about whatever she wants. She immediately got to work writing down ideas and practicing her drawing even more. I was so proud of her - in a world of consumer culture, she figured out that she can create, and I love that.

@harrybo clearly we haven't lost it if your baby boy just displayed it. Multiply his desire to fix by hundreds of thousands. 9 year olds just aren't the people who write articles or blogs....maybe yours should?

@harrybo On the other side of the see-saw, I tried going to two gas stations to put air in my tires. I couldn't read the display on the air dispenser as it charged me $1 to do nothing. The Attendants couldn't help. I'm used to doing the usual things like this with my car and even remember when getting air and water at my local 76 was free.
I ended up going to the tire place where I bought them. For $10, they filled and tested all 4 and rotated them. They even told me the tie rod u joints were a mess but completely functional.
I'm seriously considering getting one of those big air stations that AAA use to reinflate flats rather than the wimpy one I got on Amazon that did nothing. Youtube's Project Farm even did a review of which ones are worth it.

@harrybo I was responsible for getting myself up and off the school. When my electric alarm clock stopped alarming, my da told me he’d buy another if I couldn’t fix it, but I had to try fixing it first.
I did fix it, and lots of other things since.

@harrybo my teacher parents gave me a box of batteries wires switches light bulbs metal rods etc and no instructions
I played with this so much (but didn’t become an electrical engineer)
