    I get so much AI spam related to jobs, and it’s so obvious because AI cannot articulate what my job is at all. “I am so impressed with your work in critical infrastructure intelligence forensics testing” ???

    I even get AI headhunted by AI companies who also have no idea what I do. It doesn’t say a lot about the capability of their AI.

    @hacks4pancakes I have a terrible premonition that things are going to get a lot, lot worse before they get better. The need to apply for so many roles to even get one interview means that it's tough to sit there and customise your resume and cover letter over and over and over, when there's a machine Right There that self-proclaimed "experts" giving bad advice claim is the solution to all your problems. That makes it easier to apply for roles, so every role gets more applicants, so it's harder to stand out and get an interview, so everyone is sending out even more applications... it's a very vicious cycle.

      @hacks4pancakes I think we anthropomorphise AI tools because of the natural language response. So we are more forgiving than we would be if those tools used a more mechanical tone in generated output.

      There's few tech tools that would be so popular with such poor observed results. But if those poor results come from our friendly chatbot, well that's ok.

        People don’t get that how far a bit of courtesy and effort goes in job hunts. I have gifted conference passes, party invites, given referrals, certification vouchers, and internships to mentees who showed up and cared. I’ve also permanently blocklisted people who low effort AI spammed, or no showed.

        @hacks4pancakes This is so spot on. I'm not in the same league as you for mentoring (by a long way) but I go above and beyond for mentees for the same reasons.

        @ludicity 's podcast with a CISO about the teaching exercises they set for mentees that only one person completed was instructional. (... rest of it was on point too)

        There also seems to be a heap of no effort/low effort cover letters now... is that not a thing anymore?

          @plasticine_era @hacks4pancakes Cover letters and calling people were how I got ahead when I still sought full-time employment, but I've heard that the cover letter game has been totally upended by GenAI.

          I suspect my letters weren't even very good, but managers could at least just filter by whether one was attached at all.

              @ludicity @Viss Was a great pod. IMHO Lot's of infosec truths told on that one. Thanks for that. I enjoyed it. I had pretty much the same exercise predicates for my mentee group.

                @ludicity @hacks4pancakes Thanks. I suspected that might be the case. We still hand choose all our applications instead of just "Top 20 - AI Survey Says..".
                It's so distressing that hiring, being the most important decision you are going to make for your working life and the people working around you, is being gatekept by the word matching machine. I get it takes time away from the normal work to do it properly.... but spend the time FFS!!!
                Anyhoo... TED-talking to the converted. Sorry.

                    @hacks4pancakes
                    Lots of folks might not realize that any job/gig where you interact with others has a very real “ #CustomerService “ component.

                    I do tech kinda stuff for my “day job” and there’s a large amount of it that is simply getting folks what they need/want, though there are specific skills involved.

                        Next time a recruiter asks me if they can use AI to work my resume or AI anything, not worth my time a all.
