What the fuck is going on in #Germany #Deutschland

@benroyce I know. I am 53 and my grandfather went with the Nazis as a young man. My mother broke the contact later on for he still believed in a coming III. Reich with all the hatred and evil. Luckily I was a science nerd at a young age and did not fall for his lies and stories (+met the right people to the right time). But spending most of my time in a library I soon noticed his twisting and bending history. @diekehrseite
i used to be friends (i moved) with a former bundeswehr guy. he was from munich and when they tried to reassign him to east germany after reunification he said "fuck no" and quit and immigrated to the usa
he married a 1st generation german american woman. over at his house one evening after too many beers her very old mother started talking about when the ussr entered east germany at the end of wwii. they quickly shushed her and moved her out of the room!

@benroyce Ja, they definetely were not all part of the resistance... I dug out some family history which made my blood freeze. @diekehrseite

What the fuck is going on in #Germany #Deutschland
#AfD is poised to win the election in #SaxonyAnhalt on Sunday?
Fuck
That's former East Germany right? I sense a possible cultural spit with former West Germany. I could be wrong
Well, take it from this depressed and angry American: don't stop fighting
Flip it before the cancer grows
A lot of Americans just sort of gave up. It's maddening how easily so many just roll over. Don't do that

Saxony-Anhalt is one of five federal states in which the AfD is classified as a confirmed far-right extremist party from the Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
Based on the experiences of National Socialism, our Basic Law expressly provides for the possibility of initiating proceedings to ban parties that act in a manner hostile to the constitution.1/

@benroyce
A motion for such proceedings must be filed with the Federal Constitutional Court by the federal government _or_ the Bundesrat _or_ the Bundestag, which then reviews the facts of the case and, if warranted, issues a ban on the party.2/

@benroyce
However, none of the aforementioned institutions authorized to file such a motion has so far been able to bring itself to stop the neo-fascists, even though there have been—and continue to be—large demonstrations demanding precisely that.3/

Fun fact: A few days ago, the leading candidate of the fascists in Saxony-Anhalt was invited by a student representative to appear on a children’s program on public broadcasting (ÖRR) for an interview, during which he explained, among other things, that in the future, children with a migrant background would be taught in separate classes if his party came to power, because they would all have to leave anyway (be deported).4/

@benroyce
Btw: Public broadcasting was established by the Allies after World War II as a non-commercial, independent broadcaster with a clearly defined educational mandate to promote democratic values. It is funded by license fees. So we’re all inevitably paying for Nazis to be constantly invited onto talk shows (and now even onto children’s television) to spread their poison.Germany 2026

Trying to follow local shitshows on the other side of the world is *not* ignorant.
Most of us here don't know shit about what's really going on in the U.S. either.
#NoKings ...
We here keep getting focused on the horrorbaby.
Here it's the same. Most of the many! protests against Nazis right in #SaxonyAnhalt "didn't make it" to any media.🤨
That's why something like the fediverse got so important.
as i said in a sister comment in this thread, i used to be friends (i moved) with a former bundeswehr guy from munich who quit and immigrated to the usa. he quit because they tried to station him in east germany and he said "fuck no." so my perception is also warped by the unkind opinions of a hot head bavarian guy
this was 10 years ago. even 10 years ago he lamented there were new "brown shirts" as he said rising in germany again

it's the same in the usa
the centrist democrats just grin and continue on as if everything is normal. talking and dealing with outright fascists. plastic and spineless people
it's maddening
it's why here in the usa we need to take over the democratic party because third party doesn't work in our fucked up FPTP voting system. and we're making some movement. AOC, Mamdani, El-Sayed, etc

@benroyce
you are wrong. The split exists but only in a sense that in East-Germany prople are not following politcal parties forever before they give up. Similar results can happen in the western part of the country. And the root cause is the disastrous ruling of F. Merz. Political values are completely eroded. -

In Germany, all political parties—with the exception of “Die Linke”—have, over time, more or less jumped on the deportation bandwagon, and, unfortunately, a vocal anti-Semitic faction has established itself within “Die Linke,” so that the choices here now amount to choosing between the plague and cholera.🤪 -

@benroyce from time to time they kill a leftist here - this is to proof that they can still function

We even have our own little offshoot of the Heritage Foundation. They call themselves Republik21 and market themselves as a conservative think tank because that sounds nicer. But the playbook is the same—just tailored to the specific constitutional characteristics of Germany. -
