    This is called the #pumpfoil. She is #pumpfoiling

    You pump up and down with your legs and that motion alone is all that is necessary to translate via a hydrofoil under the water surface (like a wing) to give you lift and forward motion

    You need good balance, endurance, and if you stop pumping you lose lift and sink rapidly

    EDIT: this is Alina Kornelli. See @bruno 's comment below

      Looks fun

      in not so related news:

      My stupid brain went here;

      If they ever make a "waterworlded" version of little house on the prairie we have the person to play Laura Ingalls during the credits.

      I better check my meds I think.

        @benroyce

        My friend had kids. They grew up to also learn "boarding".

        They've taken it to unbelievable heights.

        4 ft X 8 ft board. Couches with 1. 2. 3 people sitting on it. Or using 6 ft. Ladder.

        None of this stuff is fastened to the board... so learned experience is what it takes.

          @JohnJBurnsIII @alex

          I think it could be done with a specially designed hydrofoil that is very large and very light. Expensive material. It would have to be a special kind of pumpfoil designed for open water starts

          Or an electric assist. Or a paddle you have to carry with you slung over your shoulder or else. If you lose it: you're stuck

          And with all these caveats, it would still only be possible for very athletic people

          @benroyce @JohnJBurnsIII from watching people launch from a run, I’d say it looks impossible to launch while swimming. But I never searched for counter-proof.

            I think the dress undersells how fkn strong her legs must be.

                                          @benroyce @bruno

                                          I find the first 45 seconds of this wing foiling video to be .. heartlifting, somehow.

                                          You can see many examples of pumping while the rider hunts for the next free ride from a new gradient wind or wave.
