people who complained about #MidsomerMurders lack of diversity didn't get that it’s a show about dispelling the myth of white supremacist solidarity.

so much of the white-on-white violence is by nepobaby manchildren pissed they can keep riding on their families’ names & fortunes.
the show is not only a master class on the consequences of late-stage #capitalism. it’s brilliant at showing the decline of English hegemony & the villainy of British class #warfare.
in other words, notwithstanding the ridiculousness of some of the murders, #MidsomerMurders is #woke as fuck

@blogdiva Sgt. Gavin Troy is very concerned about all the homosexuals he is encountering. Barnaby, “Get used to it Troy. It’s the 20th Century, man.”

@blogdiva One old British series that could be seen as sort of woke might be the Avengers. Steed and Peel were often going after mad technological visionaries and industrialists who had crazy plots to end democracy. Emma would happily off half the people running tech companies today.

@blogdiva I love how the show dishes on the country wealthy. They generally suck, even if they weren’t the murderers.
The working folk are often redeemed in the course of the episode.

@blogdiva For many years #MidsomerMurders had a producer that didn’t hire any POC. Once they removed him, the show is more balanced allowing a more diverse pool of good and bad ‘guys.’ And, yes, the humor is very tongue in cheek.
It also means my American husband is terrified of villages in rural England…

@classwario yes although start with the first one, even if you just randomly see the rest. the first is based on the original novels AND sets the tone for the whole series. it is truly WTAF tv.
btw Caroline Graham and the tv producers call their work neogothic. i can respect that.

but that’s my whole point: the show, like the novels, are about the violence of postwar capitalism unleashed by the decline of hegemonic england and the british empire
the producers’ brilliance was to let the white-on-white violence roll whilst smacking down the neocolonialism of late-stage capitalism INSIDE ENGLAND and against it’s white people. .
this is one instance that as a WOC, am not bothered by the casting.
