I wrote so many words today and yet I still have 3 documents I'm supposed to write before I go to bed... And it's entirely the FCC's fault.

Submitting scientifically accurate, well written documents to the FCC at this point is probably about as effective as a Monty Python-style "I fart in your general direction!" but a fuckton more work.

By the way, if you have time and energy and farting in the general direction of the FCC sounds fun, instructions on how to post your own comment to the FCC on Reflect Orbital or 1 million new SpaceX sats are here: https://darksky.org/news/two-satellite-proposals-threaten-the-night-sky-the-window-to-act-is-now/

(In aggregate, from many people, it will likely be a lot more useful than farting in their general direction. But it will take lots and lots of comments...)

      @sundogplanets
at this point you'd probably save time if you wrote to their level:
      See satellite fly
      See satellite glitch
      See satellite fall
      Fall satellite fall

Sam, I think that the FCC will do what its chairman's Rich Masters tell it to do.

@sundogplanets I’m pretty sure they just pipe all correspondence to /dev/null (after putting your name on some list for ICE to review, probably) but, hey, at least they’re not sending poop emoji replies so that’s something.

@sundogplanets @Ruhrnalist Yay! I don't know how much cognitive energy I have to actually write something (the instructions look long), but I have at least boosted and hope to get something said to them, even if it's only very little.

@sundogplanets I'm feeling particularly dumb now that I've actually tried to follow the instructions, and failed at almost the first hurdle. I'll try again later and hope the brain cells fire up more efficiently.

@sundogplanets is it fuckton or fucktonne? Does that differ from shitload which seemed to be common parlance when I was younger.

@sundogplanets done; fortunately I already have a FRN due to HAM license, so the annoyingly obtuse FCC site is a bit more navigable. Anyone doing this comment submittal should know that when it comes time to reference the "file number", you do NOT have to scroll through the choices (which are seemingly infinite), but can PASTE the file number into the entry field.

@sundogplanets Is there any hint that comments on paper command more attention than electronic ones? I noticed nothing said they had to be on any specific size of paper, so I can easily print four copies on one page and cut it into pieces.

In my (7am-way-too-early) meeting this morning with a bunch of extremely sad astronomers, I heard the best description of SpaceX's million satellite filing: "an unserious filing with serious consequences"

Despite the FCC making it ridiculously hard to submit comments, over 300 have already been submitted for both SpaceX's million sat filing, and Reflect Orbital's filing.

@sundogplanets I think that is the best way to frame it. I don't particualry think Reflect Orbital has a viable business idea but just floating the idea might set a dangerous precedent that it's okay to mess with our cosmic backyard like that. I signed another DarkSky petition a few weeks ago I believe, or is that this one?

@sundogplanets The fact that the FCC is requiring a CORES account to leave a comment is absolutely outrageous.

But given that is what they have done, all US hams are in a position to leave a comment much more easily since we already have CORES accounts.

@sundogplanets I really do not accept the authority of the american FCC over the nightsky here in Not-USA. Polluting the sky like that is not something for one nation to decide
