Be prepared to close registrations early in order to prevent server instability, it will automatically direct users to other servers for sign up.
@GossiTheDog If you know people who might want to join Mastodon but struggle with the picking a server part this site has a curated list it can suggest from with a push of a button:

@GossiTheDog And the first idiot with "it's not Mastodon, it's the fediverse" will appear.
@bjo @GossiTheDog It seems you are the first ; )

@GossiTheDog Not doubting your reasoning, but keen to understand it more.
Would this be a "citizens of this green and pleasant land are banned from it by law" or a "department of media culture and sport don't think people should use it and are closing their account for six months"?
Not suggesting that Twitter is a good place (it's really not), but the govt. track record on matters cyber is not brilliant at times.

@GossiTheDog You may actually see a surge in VPN usage.
Anyway, this would be a Net Neutrality infringement.
@jpages @GossiTheDog does the UK have any net neutrality guarantees?

@GossiTheDog I wonder if it would also help to spread the load of these current-events driven big migrations into other parts of Fediverse? Help people discover some of the other options they might like that have room on their instances too, like piefed or gotosocial etc. We have to kinda decide if the goal is fame & cash for our own project, or a healthier social web in society by successfully finding new digital homes for folks in times of strife. -
@GossiTheDog Really can't see that happening given that thousands of British companies and organisations (including the government itself) almost exclusively use X.
@Umiamz @GossiTheDog There is a lot of discontent among Labour MPs about this, many of them have been quietly pushing to leave Twitter for a while (a year+). If that happens, it's likely that the ball will start rolling pretty quickly and I wouldn't be surprised if the site ends up banned under the OSA soon afterwards.

Maybe you should temper your expectations.

@GossiTheDog Considering the number of UK friends absolutely beholden to another antisocial media giant, I fear it may be more of a case of "The Threadcoats are coming"?

@GossiTheDog Every country should move toward banning Twitter given its recent and intentional CSAM problem. Good on the UK for possibly being the first. As for your Mastodon instance, open registrations without approval should be discouraged anyway. That's the only antispam measure we've got.

@quanin it’s not the only anti spam measure on my instance.

@GossiTheDog It helps, though. Out of curiosity, what else are you using? I don't have that problem yet but it's a federated instance so I probably will.

@quanin the built in Captcha support filters almost all of it, I also manually review new users and IP block problematic subnets.
My server has been up for 3 years as open registration the whole time, on the Join Mastodon server list too, and there’s never been a spam problem.

@GossiTheDog HCaptcha is Mastodon's only CAPTCHA option, and that poses accessibility concerns. You may be inadvertently preventing users with some disabilities from signing up on your instance before they reach the pending approval stage.

@GossiTheDog What about age verification? Isn't that required now? I thought Mastodon either couldn't or wouldn't age verify.
