    Anyone saying "Scientists don't want you to know this fact" has never met a scientist.

    Scientists are famous oversharers.

        @neuronakaya

        Perhaps a truer line might be

        "Scientific journals don't want you to know this fact... without paying for it."

        I recall seeing a scientist here saying how they're willing to provide free copies of their paper upon request, avoiding this cost to the reader.

        This, of course, supports your hypothesis about scientists sharing. 🙂

          @neuronakaya On a tour of the museum of nature’s workshops and storage facility. …and spent thirty minutes talking with the mollusk expert. I could have been there for hours getting the excited brain dump from them.

            @neuronakaya the idea that scientists ‘don’t want you to know a fact’ is statistically incompatible with their behavior

            they publish ~2.5m papers/yr, upload 200k+ preprints, make >3m figures, and generate so many supplements that journals added file‑size limits because people kept submitting appendices the size of small video games

            i once heard of 14gb of raw data uploaded ‘in case someone might care.’

            @hvanleeuwen Scientists also know that gb means gram bits. You want GB, gigabytes.

              @neuronakaya that's usually just used in clickbait news article titles.

                @neuronakaya The other one is about scientific consensus. Science skeptics pretend there’s a cabal to present a united front. In reality, most scientists try their damndest to *disprove* accepted theories because that’s one very good way of making a name for yourself. Agreeing with everyone does nothing for your reputation. If a majority of scientists agree on anything — up to and including the color of the bloody sky — it’s because there’s no possible way to dispute the facts.

                  @neuronakaya 💯💯💯💯💯❣️
                  As is evident every time I talk with someone 😹
                  Internal conversation: “Ooohh! New person! Did they ever hear this new (scientific fact or discovery) before!?! They look like they really want to hear this!” (Definitely assumed this before opening mouth😹)
                  In a classroom raises hand: “I just wanted to comment on (various scientific factoids) that the rest of the class might be interested in this (random scientific fact related to factoid), it’s terribly fascinating!”😹

                    @WTL @neuronakaya reminds me of an experience I had at a museum. Me, geeking out about the amazing insect collection, lady comes up to me and asks questions, I start going on and on about any insect she points at and then says “I need to write this down to help with my tours” (she was the tour guide 😹)

                      If you ask one to explain their work, it's often hard to get them to stop talking.

                        Same here. I'll stop when they swipe their hand over their head and say, "that's way over my head." It's usually a signal that they want it to stop. Please stop.
