A lawmaker in Thailand is proposing that women be allowed to have up to four husbands.

I don’t think I know any straight women who want more than one

@skinnylatte I know that polyandry used to be a thing in Tibet, while polygyny used to be a thing among Mormons (and others). My guess is that these things were more about social/economic/religious reasons than anything remotely to do with agency.

On the face of it, it looks like it might be an equality thing, but then I see the pic of the guy who's proposing it. Maybe he's just doing it to stir up anti-Muslim sentiment? I don't really know. Anything.

    (and I also think that "marriage isn't a word; it's a sentence")

@skinnylatte Would they all be in the same home? Would they be my support staff? Ha!

Would I have to sleep with all of them? Would they do the dishes? Would I have to constantly pop out babies?

Would I be able to have my own home that they can't enter unless I invite them? And could I go on vacation, by myself, whenever I wanted to?

Would they clean toilets? Or cook dinner? Or change diapers?

Do these men also have other wives? Do I have to get along with them?

      Who is cooking and cleaning?

@skinnylatte Who is in control of my finances? Who is in charge? Who makes decisions that affect all?

Who has custody of the kids?

Ugh!!! It all seems like such a nightmare.

@skinnylatte ... on a tangential note... matchmaking. It still goes on the world over, doesn't it? Here's one near me...

@skinnylatte as it stands now, Thai men can have four wives. And gay marriage is finally legal. So could this usher in the Thai polycule?

@skinnylatte Well, it depends on the situation. I am happy with one husband, however, if it was okay (both societally and with my husband) to have at least one more husband, I would do it ON CONDITION if that person was also very good with all of us and participated with daily tasks. As I have fertility issues, I am not worried about “too many children” problems 😹. Again, it’s all very situational and conditional, not just “sure, 3 more would be great!”🤣
Regarding some men, yeah no thanks 😹

@skinnylatte However, there is something to be said about having more than one partner. Because one person cannot and should not be “everything you’ll ever need” (sounds like a Swiss Army knife 🤣). My husband has his strong set of qualities that are very important to me in a partner. However, he is lacking in some aspects (like taking long walks and just talking (he talks EVEN LESS then any man I’ve ever known 🤣🤣)) I wouldn’t trade him for anyone in the world. It would be nice to have one more 😹

In the US anyway, the polyamory community tends to be very women-led, and somewhat hetero. Although there's a lot of bi and pan, and there are certainly gay and lesbian polycules

Ah. Huh. Smurf marriages would be better.

I know there’s a big diagrammatic assumption that “excess” men make soldiers. Not so clear to me that history tells us which way the army will face.

Thai law, which states, "A man or a woman cannot marry each other while one of them has a spouse."[5]

That makes this law project even more bizarre, yeah. The four wives rule is applied outside of Thailand - the gender parity measure of four husbands would be merely virtue signaling in a Buddhist-majority country

No idea what the thinking is in Thailand, but in some cultures, such as northern India and Nepal, polyandry is a means to keep property intact within a family. No breaking up farms and assets to divide them between multiple descendants, thus avoiding shrinking resources from one generation to the next. Lineage is matrilineal.

I hear the patriarchy gasp while clutching its man-pearls. 😆

A lawmaker in Thailand is proposing that women be allowed to have up to four husbands.

I don’t think I know any straight women who want more than one

@skinnylatte maybe if you have 4 they will keep each other busy doing boys night and you get some time and space to yourself
