We need more *fun.* Desperately. I’d say this is a truly urgent problem. There just isn’t much to do anymore that’s really fun. Games are becoming formulaic. Arcades haven’t been updated in 10 years. Movies are all “enjoy the 899th Spider-Man.” We need more new things, fun things, things that don’t cost a fortune, and ways to make them accessible.

@jzb The only "do we really need this " movement that has had any traction is the Republican party. They will always think measures meant to enforce equality are being trotted out way too fast. I completely agree with questioning the Siren call of Faster-is-Better-so-STFU. But the last time people said "slow the fuck down" was their creedo, we called them hippies.

@craignicol @jzb When I look back at my small business support days, along with Stefanos recent example of a customer not valuing his expertise. I'm reminded of the local builder my parents used to use. He was in his fifties and knew my family as they recommended him.
There was a mutual relationship of respect.
Which isn't something I've felt from clients as there's always a younger hungrier business.
Some clients go from firm to firm and now to AI. The respect was never mutual.

@jzb yes actually, the mechanisms of capitalism demand ever faster growth. If you want your business to survive, you either need to out-compete your competitors, or be protected by regulation. To beat the competition, you have to be more powerful. You become more powerful by raising more money. And investors put their money where they can expect the most returns. To slow things down, you'd have to reduce competition on a global scale or have some critical resource like oil run out. Note that this does not automatically improve conditions for most people, because markets don't care. Some extra effort would be required for that. -
@n_dimension @madduci @jzb I'm on my way to do a software QA survey at a national lab. Three days of reading change requests and asking questions, trying to understand the release process and see how it works in practice. This is a safety analysis code that's been developed for at least 35 years.
I like nuckear safety code. A better class of problems and far fewer Move Fast and Break Things cokeheads.

@jzb LLM's isn't that big of an issue I think. On demand shipping is. Its been around for 30 years and is one of the main reasons for the worlds total collaps during say Covid, Straight of Hormuz situation etc. Its fundational assumption is that small customers are not as big of an issue socially or economically for a reason so when things go wrong, the small customers pay the price through waiting - and its just recently that we've figured out that just that, for them, is a disaster for economy
