I agree, @markhurst - except for one thing: Besides being harmful as hell, plastic also remains almost impossibly useful, to the point where, if we could Thanos it away with a fingersnap today, millions of people would be dead by the end of the month.

In contrast, #AI as we currently know it brings no value that anyone has been able to point to. None. Zero.
- because no, convenience isn't value, which is another conversation we need to have.

@jwcph I'd argue that AI does have some very useful applications (applied sparingly/judiciously/etc.). Especially depending how we define the term "AI" - I mean, spellcheck is helpful and that could be considered AI.
But to the point of the column, specifically about generative AI - that's tougher to defend. I fear the moment when genAI has been intertwined with our essential systems and thus we *can't* remove it easily...

@markhurst That's why I said "as we currently know it" - the hype version very clearly doesn't cover spellcheck, magic wand tools etc.
I think there will be a way of removing it & it will be ditching the tools & systems where it is too integrated to untangle & using other ones instead, which is what many people are already doing.
Of course this approach will become more obvious & necessary if vendors too deeply invested in AI go bankrupt when the bubble pops...
