Using US surveillance tech in order to be able to say they have an alternative to US surveillance tech...
You couldn't make it up.
-
Yeah - this was never going to work.
They could have just set up an EU Commission Mastodon instance - much simpler and cheaper!

That's right. Look - it's done anyway. Put their effort into advertising that and aim to have more than 10 users.

@_elena If government’s around the world continue blocking access to what we use now behind ID verification, will Mastodon and other Fediverse services be considered illegal or unsafe?
We see it now with GrapheneOS and VPN’s and other devices without Apple and Google store services.
It makes me wonder what is in store for the open source platform and community.

We have been hacked and we lost all your data and we're not going to be able to return your finger. Sorry!
Anyway the most valuable information (to advertisers and others) is knowing exactly who we are on the Internet. This is why the age verification schemes are being pushed. I'll just stop using the Internet and go sit on the grass.
If I give these people a finger, it'll be the middle one.

@joao72 this is precisely my fear and why I speak up against it. A very dangerous slippery slope and an existential threat to the Fediverse and the open web

@_elena @EUCommission Trip. I wanted to look it up before making my claims but I can't find anything on them. There's a widentity.eu that has a privacy notice but, at least for me, it's a blank screen.
I'd bet your id information doesn't stay on your device but ends up on a blockchain of some sort. Maybe you have the option of not pushing, to enable the claim, but then nothing works because everything depends on the info being on the chain.
It's possible to do I think, but I'd be surprised.

@joao72 @_elena With government support instead of hindrance the big tech companies will be able to implement what they've been trying to forever. Yep.
Open Source fought its way in but things were new and most western governments worked for their people way more than now. Now corporations get everything and those protections that enabled open source are crumbling and the tech is finally here to lock us out completely.
Yes. We are all worried or we just don't know what's going on.

@ozzelot @andre123 @_elena @EUCommission
That's sad how our EU leaders want to mimic US instead of offering another model. "We need tech billionaires". "We need out own hegemonic centralized platforms". "We need our own global surveillance solution".@Preuk @ozzelot @andre123 @_elena @EUCommission We demand our place in the sun? Again? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weltpolitik)

@_elena I wish you luck and hope the right people hear you. Thank you.

@_elena @EUCommission I don't even understand how this thing works. They claim to have no access to the user's identity data and that it stays local on the device. So why do they need you to scan your passport while they are countless ways to authenticate anonymously?
In a press report they say that the goal is to confirm you're humain without revealing who you are, yet in the very next sentence they say that they encourage a culture where users engage under their real names, WTF?@bladecoder @_elena @EUCommission Theoretically you can first confirm the loop with the device (that's the qr code stuff) and then use its camera to scan the scan code on your id document. Then this could be looked up in the standard way (probably varying degrees of access to your government's API) to get "temporary" access to your ID info. Then it can do whatever comparing it needs via face scan, which doesn't work well, to validate the person and device together....
