This one will hurt: I love 1Password as a product.

This one will hurt: I love 1Password as a product. But I'm the son of a concentration camp survivor. I will not give money to companies that align themselves with nationalism, and certainly not ethnic cleansing. Completely disappointing, @1password. https://www.flyingpenguin.com/dhh-nazism-funded-by-1password-vp-who-wrote-honest-security/
VP of 1Password used a picture of his kids as an explanation of why he used company money to financially support a fascist.
Sad af.

@ben@werd.social @1password I bought a version 7 license and never bought the subscription and I'm glad I didn't. I've been working to divest from subscription-based things for some time now. Every product that claims to provide "convenience" these days deserves a good look under the microscope. 1pw big thing is password sync? That's a minor inconvenience I'm willing to shoulder myself.

@ben @1password Well. It's as they said: they already have a strong membership in that community.
And there we see their justification: a fuck ton of money.
Is what it is. Don't go hoping you can change their minds.

@ben @1password It's an absolute tragedy and I think at this point they likely will not take their move back unfortunately. Had a look at Passbolt and Proton Pass also looks promising.
-
@stanley I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt - it’s just a tech deal - until the CEO came out in support of DHH and his worldview personally. That’s untenable to me.
-
@ben Oof, I missed that.
I guess I'm dreading trying to explain to my wife that we may need to change password managers because of these twisted relationships and wondering if maybe I'm being overly reactionary.
For example, I have a Framework laptop and they've supported Omarchy in the past. But would switching to Lenovo or Dell really be any better? What's the harm I'm trying to address?

@ben@social.benjaminturner.me @ben@werd.social @1password It’s not just the sync, it’s the sharing, the access controls, the monitoring, the array of clients, etc.
I am fucking out of their systems and taking my family with me, but let’s not pretend they weren’t solving a real problem at a fair price for many.

@ben @1password Disappointing is such a gentle word…
-
At this point, checking out of technology and learning to live without electricity is starting to become more morally attractive with each passing day...
-
@scott @ben @aliasvault That sucks! Yeah, no PP then it is. I also tried Bitwarden in the past but I really think it lacks in quality. Ideally the new alternative would be open source. But I'd appreciate a writeup of your findings.

@ben never beholden yourself to just one company. always have a backup in the wind, just in case.

@ben I'm bringing this up because I've found you to be a deeply thoughtful person and it's something I've been struggling with...
There has to be a difference between a 1Password, whose crime is funding a project that is led by someone with hateful views and a Palantir, whose entire business is to empower authoritarianism, right?
I feel like we need a #FashTech tier list.
-
@Downes @ben @1password same, i might actually write my own one..
@Downes @ben @1password got thinking about the fun stuff like the security and authentication model, and possibly a plausible-deniability-duress feature. But i realise the least appealing bit will be writing browser interoperability

@ben @1password it’s going to take me some time because I have an entire family to move, but it’s not a question of if it’s only a matter of when I get everyone off 1Password.

@ben @1password this piece is solid. It is missing what I think was the most outrageous post, with the explicit call to action at the end:

@stanley @ben Well, if you're just looking for some other open hardware to try, MNT has a new Pocket Reform coming out that looks sweet, and they're a lot stronger on actually releasing specifications than Framework ever was https://shop.mntre.com/products/mnt-pocket-reform

@ben @1password @thomasfuchs Our business adopted both 1Password and Basecamp when those products were new. Canceled Basecamp after DHH bullshit London post, canceling 1Password today.
