While talking to a colleague about how I recently learned most people have never sat on a cow it came up that she has never sat on a horse. Like, not even once during childhood.
Another colleague admitted they also have never sat on a horse.
My hypothesis is that most people have at one point in their life sat on a horse.

@Pepijn Yes! I have a strange connection to this, but I attended diabetic camp. You see, camps exist for multiple reasons. One week you might have rainbow camp, for cancer survivors, and the next you might have asthma camp. There are also weeks where they serve as the camp for the boy scouts, the girl scouts, or any other club. I attended diabetic camp from age 7 through 12, and I rode a horse each year.

@Pepijn We had a neighbor with a horse and a pony next door growing up, in early 1970s suburbs near Baltimore. The family finally sold that big chunk of land, which included their house, the house we rented from them, and several acres of wooded pasture, about 12 years ago.

@Pepijn My youngest aunt runs https://horseshelpingpeople.co.uk/ - so yes, once or twice
although not for years now.There's a great photo of me when I was a tiny barely school-age child, perched on top of a huge gelding another aunt used to own. We were wildly mismatched in size, but Captain was a very good, patient, and placid boy

@Pepijn I have, twice, sat on a horse.
The second time, that horse decided I didn't know what I was doing, so he'd be in charge. Not disastrous, but not helpful. Total time: about five minutes.
The first time, that horse decided I didn't know what I was doing, so it was time for me to get off. She moved so quickly two feet to the left that I did not. Of course, at that point, gravity took over. Total time: about five seconds.

@Pepijn I once had to wrestle a cow. TBF it was still a baby cow, but yeah. Somehow the little fucker got through the fence and didn't want to go back in the pen.
Now seeing a farmer running tackle a (different) calf that managed to run through the electric fence somehow was downright terrifying... (It hit the fence, got tangled in it, then untangled on the other side within the span of ~3 seconds, "mostly unharmed" at the end of the ordeal)

@Pepijn I had nothing but horses on my mind when I was growing up. Started vaulting when I was 7 and riding about two years later. I earned it by helping in the stable and with the smol kids vaulting lessons. Stopped when I was 18.
I guess it depends on where you grew up if you even regularly see horses... The swiss government payed farmers for breeding and keeping military horses. In the 90s it was pretty common for farmers to have some horses for that purpose.

@Pepijn The first time I rode a horse (a pony) was when I was about 7, on an uncle’s farm. An older brother and I decided we were going to ride him, so we somehow managed to get onto him together (no idea anymore how) and the first thing the pony did was run straight under a low hanging tree branch. From getting on to hitting the ground took about 3 seconds. My uncle enjoyed a good laugh.

@Pepijn Not sure about the cow. I used to have a friend who casually rode his favourite cow but I don't think he ever let me ride. I probably did *sit* on her though, statically. The cow's name was Joris.
