🇩🇪EU-Parlament lässt #Chatkontrolle 1.0 trotz Mehrheits‑Nein (314:276) passieren – Massenscans privater Chats bis 2028 erlaubt.

@bjorn @echo_pbreyer An absolute majority of all MEPs incl. absentees was required to vote down the proposal, I think that was the point of the procedural tricks deployed this week?
@HaTetsu @bjorn @echo_pbreyer what I didnt get is: if theres no absolute NO-Majority, then there is also no absolute YES-Majority...

@echo_pbreyer What kind of fictional democracy is the European Parliament if the majority vote against it means nothing!?

@andrewblasco @echo_pbreyer the problem is that the European Union is the biggest compromise ever envisioned. One of those compromises is seen here. The parliament needs to get an absolute majority to fight back against the decision of the member states(The Council of the European Union where national ministers vote). The only way to have this not happen again is treaty reforms which needs all the member states to agree on it...
-
@smallcircles @echo_pbreyer Yea this sucks, the eu is often does wonderful things but it is also deeply flawed as seen here. The only fix for it is treaty reforms and unfortunately it is unlikely that member states will agree on such reforms any time soon...

There's a discussion on HN again, where the matter gained a lot of attention the past couple weeks.
One person clearly named in top comment: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roberta_Metsola
> "Roberta Metsola's actions this week jeopardise the legitimacy of the EU project as a whole."
Another comment about "What is coming back" with #ChatControl 1.0:
> "US tech companies are once again allowed to scan private messages without a warrant or prior suspicion. This affects direct messages on platforms like Instagram, Discord, Snapchat, Skype, and Xbox, as well as emails via Google’s Gmail and Apple’s iCloud."

@echo_pbreyer ”no but you see, OUR fascism is good”

> “The fact that Chat Control is moving forward against the will of the majority of voting MEPs is a farce and damages democracy. Our children are the real losers in this undemocratic process. The passage of a genuine, permanent child protection regulation is now in serious jeopardy. The Council will never agree to a desperately needed paradigm shift as long as they can simply stick to the old approach of suspicionless scanning at the whim of the tech industry.”
So true. I am very pro-EU. Except these shenanigans make me get underbelly feelings of "FUCK EU, let it all go to shite then" (to say it diplomatically). Well.. take a deep breath. On to fighting off #ChatControl 2.0.
But also: Who are these freaking lobbyists that keep pushing this shebang against the wishes of the people, at all cost? More naming and shaming, please.

@cytro Es wäre eine absolute Mehrheit nötig gewesen, siehe Link im Post
@echo_pbreyer
Was bedeutet eine absolute Mehrheit? 100% der anwesenden? -

@echo_pbreyer I'm confused. If the majority voted against it, how did it go through? What is the point of the vote?

@smallcircles @nikthechampiongr @echo_pbreyer She is also fully against womens' right to choose (all historic votes) and is married to Ukko Metsola, top lobbyist for the Royal Caribbean Group, one of the biggest air and water polluting cruise companies.
Curious how environmental protections are rolled back under her presidency - I'm sure it's just coincidence right? Right?

@Gegenwind @echo_pbreyer Könnte das etwa etwas mit Korruption zu tun haben? Wundert mich, dass sie mit Zuckerberg kein Händchen hält ...

this is the kind of reason why I'm an anarchist and find our examples of "democracy" to be always corrupt

El Parlamento Europeo deja pasar el #ChatControl 1.0 pese a que una mayoría votó en contra (314:276), permitiendo el escaneo masivo de chats privados hasta 2028. Las víctimas advierten de sus riesgos. Mi análisis
@echo_pbreyer porque si perdió... Ganó???

In a geopolitical time and new world order where the #EU has great opportunity for positive change, the #EUParliament and @EUCommission pulled a great marketing ploy on #ChatControl ..
The top upvoted comment on the very popular discussion thread on HN relating to @echo_pbreyer article says it all:
> The EU is a farce, an undemocratic virtue signaling organization.
Then sums up the farcical sad state of affairs, and ending with:
> In PRACTICALITY, the Commission can pursue any agenda whenever and however they want, and throw the votes down the drain. EU's #democracy is lipstick on a pig.

@flower2thepeople @HaTetsu @echo_pbreyer Yeah true. And the IMHO shady thing is that the previous voting had different rules for majority than this one. Also the timing is awkard, in the middle of summer. Some MEP's might have been on holiday already, making it even harder to reject.
I am in general pro EU, but I don't agree with the way this was handled.
