@davidrevoy @EUCommission I think this is targeted at those who provide services to generate AI content. They have to add watermarks to the generated content.

@chris @EUCommission Thank you. I see. I will read the details again.

In any case, if it is limited to forcing AI provider to watermark in UE, a workaround sounds very straightforward (even to a 12 years/old): a user could simply purchase a VPN, then generate AI in a region outside the EU without the imposed watermark, and then post back the result on EU networks without being flagged as AI.

@davidrevoy @EUCommission I am not sure how it works. I didn't read the legal document but one avenue would be to require a company that operates in the EU to always mark the posts. But I don't know if the law is written that way.

Google already rolled out their watermarking but that is only in metadata. I think the EU demands that the watermark is visible.

AI is being used to exponentially massacre innocent people in Palestine, by EU-backed Israel:

"(it's) used to manufacture targets so that Israeli military forces can continue to bombard Gaza at an enormous rate, punishing the general Palestinian population." This includes "enabling the systematization of dropping a 2000 lb bomb into a home to kill one person and everybody around them".

                https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AI-assisted_targeting_in_the_Gaza_Strip

@ozzelot @max @EUCommission @ASardinianAbroad to me I see it as a good thing that at least trying to lie and hide usage of AI is an actual criminal offense now, and it's a first step towards hopefully stricter regulation in the future

@xgebi @EUCommission this is almost pointless for exactly that reason - it will be left to national enforcement of loose law i.e. mainly looking away.

(That said, Ireland's enforcement of privacy rights is not much to brag about. When companies don't respect privacy law, as many based here don't, we almost never take action and the rare triggered action are slow and mere speeding fines when we do.)

@kasilas @xgebi @EUCommission Well, generally the IE DPA has to be dragged into acting. By activists, Irish courts, or EU institutions like the EDPB.

That's the trouble with MS-level enforcement; politicians literally see lenient enforcement of regulations as a competitive location advantage.

Or to cite the initial Austrian implementation law for the GDPR, if my memory is correct, the DPA was actually instructed not to fine in regular cases, just to admonish.

                            @EUCommission Dear European Commission,

I appreciate the initiative, but I have concerns. Will the platform use AI to detect AI-generated content? As an artist whose work was trained on without consent for 20 years, detection tools now incorrectly flag my human-made art as "likely AI-generated" ( see: https://framapiaf.org/@davidrevoy/116941001377913004 ).

What safeguards exist to prevent this?

@EUCommission and what about that 30 billion AI giga factory EU tender you just announced 1 week ago? you only address the symptom, not the root cause.

"we welcome and finance this very destructive technology but don't worry we'll legally require corporations to put little labels on things that use it ☺️"

that's a good step forward but ngl I feel like EU views its citizens as complete imbeciles regarding AI policies.

From now on, companies across the EU must be clear about their use of AI.

Providers and deployers of AI must now

✔️ Inform users when they interact with AI or when it is used to analyse their behaviour.

@EUCommission Yet you want to build AI data centers.

Shut the fuck up already, EU. Make your actions speak louder than your words.

@EUCommission I'll contain my excitement until we see if this amounts to more than five additional mandatory paragraphs on the omnipresent jumpscare banner that informs me how the site and its 963 partners *really* care about my personal rights, and therefore I need to surrender them right now or pay a monthly fee instead.

@EUCommission and yet your top officials spend between 90 and 100% of their meetings with those same #bigtech companies' lobbyists. And then you create these #omnibus #deregulation initiatives to make it easier for them to do what they want.

                                          See page 15: https://corporateeurope.org/sites/default/files/2026-03/REPORT_CORPORATE%20CAPTURE.pdf

Seems like the only thing preventing you from completely handing over the #EU to #bigTech are those pesky social interest groups you refuse to meet with and meddling citizens concerned about their rights and freedoms.
