A user promoting their product doesnt fund mstdn.social, doesnt fund Mastodon. Does not drive Mastodon to.please tech bros, doesnt drive enshittification
User promotion doesnt track you, keep data on you, follow you to other sites.
If you dont like a users promotion (job offer, dog grooming, art, apps) you can mute or block. I would

Yeah, the worlds in pretty bad shape these days, and it leaks in.
Sometimes, when I need a break, I will mute accounts that I generally like but are basting themselves in the bad news, say for 30 days.
You can also block based on keywords. You can then go back and unblock them.
I don't want to shut my eyes to all the bad stuff going on, but we all gotta take care of ourselves. Too much evil news will wreck a person.
