Looks like Chromebook is being replaced with something called "Googlebook" and it is full-scale Microsoft-style Surveillance PC. Apparently anytime you "wiggle your cursor" anything that is underneath the cursor gets fed into Google's surveillance AI https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/platforms/android/meet-googlebook/
One of these things that makes me consider detecting the platform from my webserver and blocking it entirely because the probability of whatever I wrote becoming an LLM input is too high
@mcc if you find a good way to do that please post it somewhere so that i can also use it

Since the Google announcement wording also poses this as not just the future of Chromebook but the future of Android, this raises serious questions, for me, about how much longer using Android will continue to be an option. Google's been escalating removal of Gemini opt-outs and Android is almost the only one of their products I haven't yet dropped as a result. (This is, of course, happening at the same time governments worldwide are making citizenship contingent on owning an Android or iPhone.)

@mcc I feel like we have two choices, and they both really suck.

@mcc I'm thinking about the plausibility of using an alt OS. I'm (?falsely) reassured that my phone is 8 years old and probably won't be able to handle that level of surveillance but I also just don't know

@mcc what's missing is a #Google-free #Android-Fork beyond a mere #ROM.
- #LineageOS is close but not quite and #GrapheneOS are too busy appeasing #Cyberfascists with *"#DeviceAttestation"* aka. #Malware features…

@GeePawHill It's like a U.S. presidential election that way. @mcc

@mcc In a recent update. Samsung is increasing their a.i stuff in Android. This with the Google a.i stuff is making Android unusable. I am forced to use Android for various reasons, also because there is no competition on the market.

@mcc 32-bit CPUs and up were a mistake.
At least you can't run this AI bullshit on a 286. Your 286 wont spy on you.

@mcc@mastodon.social Oh, neat. I can't wait for my student to come home from school and tell me about all the cool stuff AI on their school-issued laptop can do.

Oh, well. My Chromebook is knackered anyway. Guess I'll replace it with a 4K laptop running Linux.

@kkarhan @mcc I'm using a Fairphone 4 running e/OS/ which appears to be utterly Gargoyle-free unless I install the wrong apps from "All lounge".
It was more hard work to set up than a typical big name Android phone, but most things are covered, although I haven't found a decent NFC payment app yet--Curve has currently had 6,746 attempts blocked by e/OS/, which regards them as attempted data leaks.

@mcc I can see schools upgrading to these without so much as a second thought about surveillance or primacy of the students.
As for alternatives to Android? Some have mentioned installing GrapheneOS on an older model Android, some have suggested Linux, Kali or Tails specifically. Others have suggested a more old school dumb flip phone.
The more advanced the world has gotten, the crucial it is to keep old school or alt means of communication alive.

@mcc@mastodon.social Google seems hell bent on destroying everything that people switched to them for.

@jrdepriest @mcc the whole "Device Attestation" shite and them choosing to go with Motorola, which are so #AntiRepairDesign that they argue with @EUCommission about the #EU-wide #SupportDuration…
