A while back I used the library *all the time* to get sheet music for piano, and they increased my limit to like 20 books or something because of it. Then because I'm a disorganised nightmare I let loads of books go over and got a big fine on my account. When I gave the books back, the librarian looked at the fine, said "oooh, we can't charge you *that*!" and just deleted the fine entirely
"We'll say no more about it" 🤫
Libraries honestly. They're a gift.

@CakesOfPan @user47 I'm trying to understand why this post was presented as an image instead of as text. I see that there is alt text with the content of the image but why bother with the image at all? I'm trying to understand why people do this. Can you enlighten me?
@mlanger It was an image when I copy/pasted it here. That's all I know about it.

@mlanger I'm equally perplexed. The total amount of work, both human and computer, it must have taken to publish this image with the alt-text being exactly what the image reads is mind-bogglingly greater than just posting the alt-text as is in a post.

Years ago, a local #library would send out notices about overdue books. Their last notice was "This is your final notice" . And you never heard from them again.

@hypolite @CakesOfPan I see this all the time. I don't boost it because I think it's stupid. No matter how much I agree with the sentiment, it is somehow lowered in its value by being rendered as an image instead of screen readable text.
Does everything we say have to be turned into a fucking meme? I say no.

@mlanger Now that I'm reading the alt-text more closely, it looks like it was created by an Optical Character Recognition system that confused a lowercase L with a vertical bar|so maybe automatically created? Like you, I still disagree with the method. -

@mlanger There's absolutely nothing wrong about blocking liberally. Your account, your choices, and blocks aren't aggregated into a central behavior score so it only affects you, that's the beauty of this social network! -

@CakesOfPan What if there was a public eat, sleep, and shower facility like that in every decent sized city? Whatever else happens, you have a place to go when you need it. Similar to a Japanese capsule hotel, and as automated as possible. That would take a lot of the pressure off people.
Of course such a facility does exist in every county. It's intentionally made as unpleasant as possible so nobody voluntarily uses it, even though making it unpleasant is expensive. It's the county jail.

@CakesOfPan On recent travels I'm rediscovering how magical libraries can be.
My local library has a 3D printer lab to use free of charge (they accept donations for the filament though) and I'm anxious for the pool next door to it to finally open after years of renovation.
That'll be the perfect combination.

@jhooper First we need to ensure libraries survive. They are under constant attack from this regime and many state governments. So many libraries (and librarians!) are gone now, or struggling, or greatly reduced. By design.

@krnlg @CakesOfPan my library has been fee free for years. If you keep a book long enough they charge you a replacement charge but return it and the charge gets deleted automatically
