KDE Conf just wants to *talk* about going full A slop desktop
-
Please note that a random talk in Akademy does not in any way mean an endorsement from the community. Neither speaker have contributed to the project in many, many years, and it is ridiculous and even deceitful to imply that this is in any way an official strategy that KDE is going to pursue.
@kde this is what manufactured consent looks like. It looks pretty legit when the event details and register button is on conf.kde.org.
You're going to find this implication a lot less ridiculous as omarchy continues to be a problem.

@kde @davidgerard > This talk is an invitation — from peple with a long arc inside this community — to take a serious swing at the question the 2003 study posed and never quite resolved: what would it take for KDE to be the desktop people actively choose, not just the one some of us settle for? Attendees will leave with: a concrete proposal (KaDAi) to react to or tear apart, a clear set of asks the project could direct at Plasma maintainers, and the framing for a sovereignty conversation that KDE is uniquely positioned to lead.
if these people aren’t involved in KDE anymore, having something like this in the description of a talk given during an official KDE event is what’s ridiculous and deceitful
@kde @davidgerard listen KDE, I’ve done a couple of conferences so let me give you some advice
if you really want to have this talk on an unpopular subject associated with your conference (you shouldn’t), here’s a response you could give:
“thank you david for bringing this talk to our attention! we’ve added a disclaimer to the program that this doesn’t represent the views of the KDE project, and we’ve had a conversation with the people giving the talk.”
see how that’s more constructive than accusing someone of deceit for quoting your own website?
but I wouldn’t recommend allowing this talk at all, as its stated goal is to subvert the current AI policy of the KDE project, and you absolutely don’t need to have the project’s name on that

@lumi @davidgerard all the references and social links are linkedin links lol
@hypha @davidgerard i still can't decide whether discord or linkedin is the worst
-
@davidgerard @bms @zzt @techokami is contributing to CDE/Motif and seems to be hell-bent on keeping it slop-free so enjoy that lol

@kde needlessly aggressive response that raises way more questions than it answers

@kde I've been a Plasma user since before it was Plasma, and a regular donator to the project. If slop starts getting accepted into the codebase, I'm out.

@kde @davidgerard if the implication is so ridiculous then please don't let these slop brained linkedin ghouls establish any kind of foothold in your spaces, not even as 'a random talk in Akademy', because if you let these people preach their bs, if you give them a platform, they will recruit enough disciples from your community to poison and ruin everything you do, until that shit is "inevitable". because that's the playbook, we've seen it happen too many times already

@zzt @kde @davidgerard what I don’t understand about that statement, is people DO actively choose KDE because it is the best DE for many people. Forcing AI into it would mean an exodus of those same people and the project would die.
I’ve no idea why KDE would even entertain such nonsense at their own *official* conference, and it actively harms the project and brand.
Sometimes there aren’t two sides to an issue, this is one of those times.
If they want software they can talk to and befriend, in lieu of people, sure, no judgement. Go make it.
Maybe though, the desktop environment isn’t the platform for it… that’s kind of a major pivot. And KDE is associated with it. After all they must have accepted the RFP and thought “yeah, great idea, crack on”.

@ADHDruid @kde @davidgerard bbbbut a study from 23 years ago might have said people aren’t “actively choosing” KDE, whatever the fuck that means
-
@kde bro it's out there with your name on it, it's not "deceitful" to notice the URL and logos.
if you go straight to claiming commenting about the contents of your own damn website - and you're responding literally to me *linking* it - is "deceitful", a hit dog is hollering.
instead, please describe the process by which such an AI slop proposal - clearly chatbot spam - even gets this far.
EDIT: preserving comment at this timestamp
@davidgerard @kde That's....such a suspiciously defensive reply, like you didn't even imply that, you just linked the thing. What are they hiding? I was thinking about switching to KDE but this response has really shaken me.
(also I can't respond to KDE directly because our instances don't federate for some reason)

@zzt @kde @davidgerard why would they? GNOME hadn’t been ruined yet 🤭

@jztusk @kde @davidgerard I just want clean drinking water for me and my family.

@kde @davidgerard PUH-lease! What are you doing, allowing this take place on your ground? It's getting so rotten, omg.
-
@kde @LupinoArts @davidgerard nothing official will come from the talk at an official KDE conference whose summary includes text implying that attendees will be encouraged to push that ongoing discussion in a pro-AI direction?
> Attendees will leave with: a concrete proposal (KaDAi) to react to or tear apart, a clear set of asks the project could direct at Plasma maintainers, and the framing for a sovereignty conversation that KDE is uniquely positioned to lead.
you seem very sure about that
but we’re very sure this is going to lead to a KDE project that’s full of slop, because we’re seeing it happen in other projects
these are fringe voices now, and they’re very clearly angling at not being fringe voices for long
why allow people who aren’t core community members to give a talk on a subject which, if you’re right, they’re utterly unequipped to evaluate? if this isn’t a realistic direction for KDE to go in, why entertain it at all?

@kde @LupinoArts @davidgerard yes yes free speech or whatever
believe it or not, running the conference means you get to exclude people who you decide don’t represent your project!
it’s literally not illegal to do that, and in fact it’s your responsibility if you’re going to do the job of running a conference

@kde @LupinoArts @davidgerard so do they represent the KDE project or not?
-
@kde @librarysquirrel @davidgerard that some aibros are allowed to discuss at the conference how they would love to turn plasma into a fulltime slop-huffing enviroment is a really fucking shitty sign

KDE Conf just wants to *talk* about going full A slop desktop
https://conf.kde.org/event/11/contributions/314/
fuckin
anyone want to go interupt it every 30 seconds? they asked for it.
-

@zzt @kde @LupinoArts @davidgerard "Just because we're hosting talks at the official KDE conference about slopifying Plasma and about bugging Plasma maintainers to introduce more slop, doesn't mean we want to introduce more slop!"
