https://www.goodmorningamerica.com/living/story/8-million-thermos-jars-bottles-recalled-after-3-132568152From the headline I thought it was some kind of metal poisoning or other contamination issue. Hell no. The damn thing basically is a loaded cannon waiting to shoot it's lid on your fucking face.
If you got one of these, get rid of it now.
@bloodravenlib Huh. Well, I guess it doesn't hurt to always open bottles away from you or anyone else, like we do with champagne

@jawnsy I did wonder about that. How many people open a bottle, thermos, etc. putting their eye anywhere near it?
Oy.

@bloodravenlib one of my friends shared this because it was involved in the "Mac and Cheese bomb incident 3 years ago."
His kid left some unfinished mac and cheese fermenting in it for a week because of spring break, when he tried to open it, it took a wrench and the lid exploded into his arm and caused a massive bruise. He'd blamed it on the food fermenting which surely contributed, but this explains why it was so bad (luckily just bruised).
@platypus Oh my goodness. Good thing it was not as bad.

@bloodravenlib Well, I think a surprising number of people open champagne bottles pointing the corks in the general direction of their faces, so... I just don't think it's a precaution that most people think much about, and it's mostly fine

@bloodravenlib @jawnsy Years ago I was opening a bottle of "birch juice" (birch sap, collecting it in spring is extremely popular in Latvia) that had sat there for a while.
The cap of the bottle hit my palm so hard it got bruised. I was partially leaning over it, without the palm in the way the cap might have hit my head. So it's not that people intentionally point containers at their faces, but in some situations leaning over (think leaning down during a hike etc) can aim straight at the face. -

@bloodravenlib Thanks for the post. I have one of these 16 oz. food jars, and I will be responding to the recall.

@bloodravenlib What makes these models worse than other bottles without a pressure release valve? Is it that the caps have short threads, so they are free to move out very soon when unscrewing?
I'm thinking this is probably a potential issue on other brands and models too, so I'd like to be aware of the root cause.

@bloodravenlib As I read this over, I realize my own non-Thermos thermos thing actually has the same flaw with the lack of a pressure release valve. -

@pianosaurus @bloodravenlib
I'd say your explanation is probably correct. On my thermos, the seal let's go one and a half turn before the thread ends.Less when there is a vacuum inside, because of the direction it seals, so if anything, high pressure would release even earlier.

@bloodravenlib I was absolutely filled with dread from the story. How many other food or drink storage items are poisoning me? Is it already too late?
A whole tsunami of relief came over me finding out that the damage was mechanical. I was not prepared for such an emotional roller coaster so early in the morning.

@bloodravenlib don't put anything that fizzes or ferments into an airtight container. don't do that. for what is not, for some reason, obvious reasons.

@bloodravenlib so ... company has to make recall because people put something that can easily pressurize itself inside and then try to open it while targetting their faces?
its the same level as "warning hot" on a coffee cup or "do not drink" on a car coolant.
-
@bloodravenlib Oh shoot, so it's like a car radiator cap under pressure? What a nightmare.
@nantucketlit @bloodravenlib every sealed container with something hot or carbonated or ... able to rot WILL do the same.
closed bottle with carbonated water during a hot.day can pop, same as closed beer can...
they are all bombs if not treated with a bit of care
