@jensorensen do investors really believe this is a good idea?

A mirror with the area x is directed in a way so it directs sunlight into area y. But with y > x, wouldn't this just be some dim light? The mirror doesn't magically increase the sunlight.

@jensorensen this is the first I heard of this. Ain't no way someone is stupid enough to even suggest such a dumb idea.
The massive cost of it, the social backlash, the political and international backlash and just the engineering of it all.
For what? Just to have the giant mirror break because of some 1cm space debris?

The school finds oil, Mr burns steals it, blocks the sun, gets shot, ends in a cliff hanger on "who shot Mr burns?" Which should help you narrow it down

@jensorensen I'm sure the people wanting sunlight on demand, or to block sunlight later on, have never even seen the sun of their own volition.

@hyc @jensorensen some rare earths are needed for solar panels, and china has kinda cornered that market. That may just be due to inaction of others though.

You know, it just occurred to me that those solar satellites could be used as weapons against people on the Earth's surface. Focus the beams from multiple satellites on an area, and you could set it on fire.

@jensorensen I haven't looked into this business model very seriously but I'm assuming the orbital dynamics don't make sense. You're either going to have to park these things way far away, at which they will be uselessly dim, or make a constellation of them, with giant sails being dragged down by our atmosphere at a rate that would make a Starlink engineer blush.

@DougJayne @jensorensen It would cost under $100k to blow up something in low orbit and we could crowd fund it

@OlofKnight It has been not only suggested but formally proposed to and approved by the FCC in the US, despite the social/scientific backlash. See https://theconversation.com/the-u-s-just-approved-a-giant-space-mirror-to-test-sunlight-on-demand-low-earth-orbit-is-getting-weird-283482

Hopefully the initial test fails so miserably and embarrassingly that it bankrupts everyone involved and discourages all potential copycats... but people trying to get VC money seem to be incredibly hard to discourage as they don't actually need a workable product, they just need a concept that VC bros will eat up.

Most of the processed rare earths for solar come from China, sure. But the ore they use is usually Australian. You're right - inaction, created a solvable problem.
