    @GossiTheDog we're never going to have adequate safeguards for these. and even if we did, given the prevalence of open weights, it wouldn't even matter that much i guess. i hear there are now darkweb LLM services that let you do whatever you want with no safeguards 😕

      That whole subreddit is full of posts like that btw, it's literally people trying to sell books they've "authored" with prompts.

      It's not just one person, it gets 150k visitors a week, everybody convinced they're now Stephen King.

      @GossiTheDog I'm thinking of the vanity CD released by a parent's colleague full of meandering, aimless and mostly TUNELESS piano-bothering. Hearing that hardened my resolve to really learn piano and music theory in my adulthood.
      My hope is that some small fraction of folks see that sub and grit their teeth and work harder at learning a craft in response.

          @neurovagrant @GossiTheDog

          “Ms. GPT says she can’t…”

          I now know the style of this author, and can reproduce it accurately. It’s a basic blend of misogyny and privilege, combined with absolute mediocrity.

                @GossiTheDog Asserting ownership ("text I own") over the output of the generator based on your input is an amazing thing all on it's own. "I caused it to be generated, therefore it's mine" is a hell of a thing.

                @Unlikelylass @GossiTheDog Are we talking copyright law? As I understand it, the status quo is that the output of a slop extruder is uncopyrightable.

                  @GossiTheDog

                  It's about time.

                  "For works created on or after January 1, 1978, U.S. copyright protection lasts for the life of the author plus 70 years"

                  It should be a straightforward thing to build that in. Especially if their AI is smart enough to remember when everybody died. Not sure if that last sentence deserves an eye roll.

                    @pwloftus @GossiTheDog you are right, locally owned and managed LLMs are going to have potentially fewer guardrails of all kind.

                    We are already seeing political commentary that they are too dangerous, I guess it could get worse

                        @GossiTheDog Ironically this is exactly why I'm incredibly skeptical of e-books from unfamiliar authors that seem "too cheap". If it's under a certain price point, I automatically assume it's AI slop and won't even consider buying.

                          there have been over the time so many bestseller sludge authors who used to sell to people who didn't care much about picking what they are going to read. I don't think much changed nowadays, maybe only that the job became much easier for sloppy authors.
