Anyone with an iota of knowledge about the UK and Ireland knows that Scottish and Irish cultures are quite distinct from each other.

So, what he really means is that they're white.

@lucyweirphd @Remittancegirl Unless he's only talking about English, Irish, and lads called Scott 😆

Personally I prefer the diversity and openness of modern Ireland and Scotland, and a lot of England. Much better than the insularity, repression, and oppression that preceded it.

Ironic when you consider that 'race' in human biological terms is mostly about culture.

And which English-Scots-Irish culture is that?

The one made up of Celtic, Roman, Viking, Saxon and French cultures?

@TCatInReality I agree, but I think it is important to deny them access to the term 'culture'.

Because they constantly use it as code for race.

@brad thanks for replying. Yes, diversity is good, provided that there is integration into the existing culture.
Musk is wrong, of course. Huge Middle European, Jewish, Spanish influence, not to mention the original inhabitants whose culture has so influenced our understanding of how systems can coexist.

@TCatInReality @Remittancegirl It is characteristic of all racists, that they don't even know the culture they are pretending to defend. Germany as an example was for the last 1000 years part of a very diverse empire (inluding German, Polish, Italian, Dutch, Jewish, Hungarian people etc.) with countless quite autonomous regions & ethnicities. The goal of the nationalists/ nazis always was to eradicate this diversity and cultural heritage. Racists are basically people without culture, but hate.

@lucyweirphd Totally. Culture is such a broad term, there's such a diversity of cultures and subcultures - urban and rural (and in between), young and old, religious and not (and a myriad of differences within those broad definitions too), and so on, even within traditionally 'Irish', it's comical how many levels he's wrong on.

I reckon as long as we can be kind to each other (which isn't to say "be a doormat", either 😄 ) we all benefit from each other's perspectives and experience.

Yes. The term "culture" here is doing the heavy lifting for Musk's warped ahistorical nonsense.

By doing so, it also sidesteps genuine political questions in relation to global economic issues.

@TCatInReality @Remittancegirl they're not that distinct from each other, really, but they are very distinct from US culture. The UK/IE cultures are all shaped by Europe and colonial history in different and overlapping ways.

                                    But he means race.

@Colman I think a lot of people I know who are either Scottish or Irish would have a LOT to say about the differences in culture between them and the English. @TCatInReality

@Remittancegirl @TCatInReality they would, but it'd be mostly nonsense because they're so embedded in the mores they can only see the differences.

(I'm somewhere between Irish and English so …. Well, Irish and London. Is London England?)

@ZDL I notice that almost all the men who are such fans of the Spartans would all have been thrown off a cliff shortly after birth. @Colman @TCatInReality
