After the #Mullvad scandal a lot of folks had been looking around for a VPN provider they can trust.

The wonderful @activistchecklist got you covered there:
    https://activistchecklist.org/vpn/

Not only does it list recommended VPNs and reasons for their recommendation (along with those they don't recommend, and why), but also explains what VPNs are good for, what they are not good for, and why giving VPN advice is so hard.

Clearly a lot of research, care, and thoughtful design went into this.

@rysiek @activistchecklist proton is plagued by the same issues as mullvad, a fascist ceo, why don't they remove that option,  i wonder?

not to mention proton *has* in fact handed over customer data and PII to governments in the past,  so especially for the activistchecklist it is questionable

@samuel @rysiek not that I'm defending Proton handing over what data they have, but what they've done on their mail side (as far as I understand) would theoretically contain a lot more data than their VPN side, and I'm guessing that's why it's on the list. From what I've read, they don't store the data from your browsing history, and I'm pretty sure that has been verified to be true, so they have nothing or very little to hand over to law enforcement. Some VPNs track you to sell your data.

@mattesilver I assume you mean "VPS".

Also, with that you end up with a single exit point in a single country, and the exit IP address is tied to you specifically via your payment.

Not anywhere even close to what is discussed in that link. Giving advice like that will cause people to end up in harm's way.

@rysiek What's wrong with Mullvad? It's one of the only VPN companies that takes XMR, has absolutely 0 KYC, and... works. Their Mullvad Browser is genuinely great work, and helped me move off arkenfox.

Mullvad is genuinely doing things right, and I'll continue to reward them with my custom

EDIT: I genuinely couldn't care less what their co-founders political support is, it's shameful to kick a company that's doing so well by online anonymity, privacy, activism

@rysiek This is a great resources, thanks for sharing. Now that Mullvad is out of the equation, I had come to the same conclusion on an alternate.

Alas, I can only regenerate, rather than disable, the advertising ID on my Android build. Will be glancing through the other recommendations to make sure I have everything covered though.

@pictor @rysiek Mullvad's ethical standards are top notch as far as I'm concerned. Sustained support for anti-Chat Control, age-verification and censorship legislation is one of my top priorities. Mullvad has a stellar record on all of those

rent a VPS in Spain for 1.20€/month

find an IT nerd acquaintance, let them set up wireguard for you

                                    (edit: VPN->VPS)

Yes wireguard is a great option, but if you are in a country like China, Russia or Iran, you should use OpenVPN. Do a search to find out why 🙂
