Sculptor and artist Ambrosia Tønnesen next to her statue of painter J.C. Dahl.
Ambrosia Tønnesen (1859–1948) was Norway’s first professional female sculptor, known for her portrait busts, statues, and reliefs. She moved to #Bergen in the 1870s, where she worked as a teacher while studying art. Her career took her to Copenhagen, Berlin, and Paris, and she eventually settled in Bergen, producing over 40 public artworks in the city. Among her most notable works are the bust of Amalie Skram at Bergen Public Library and the statue of Ole Bull at Den Nationale Scene.
She was a lifelong "room mate" of British Mary Banks, from 1888 to Banks' death in 1920. The time Ambrosia worked in Bergen on this statue while Mary lived in Paris almost led to a "break up" between the two, whose letters to each other talked about jealousy and romance.
The Dahl statue is on the facade of "Permanenten" (recently AKA "Kode 1), the art industry museum in Bergen, which recently had a large exhibition of her works.
