Picture yourself as the "umarell", the guy looking at the USS Skate with his hands behind his back.
Considering my last #submarine was the all-time most liked image of this channel, here is another one! This one, a bit later, but it does actually have a connected story with the #Nautilus shown earlier.
Sir Hubert Wilkins' Nautilus had failed its mission in 1931, but the USS Nautilus (confusingly named for this story) had made the cross-Arctic trek under the ice in 1958, just before Wilkins' death in November. The USS Skate was planning to be the second submarine to do so, and came to #Bergen in 1958 as part of a European tour.
Skate also managed to cross the Arctic, 6200 kilometers mostly under the ice, surfacing ten times. On March 17 1959, she surfaced on the Pole to scatter the ashes of Sir Wilkins.
