@futurebird @mekkaokereke the UK has been at this a little longer than the US and sadly the answer is "yes."
Lee Anderson is the worst one for it but there's long been members of parliament suggesting people complaining about food prices live off what basically amounts to gruel. barley porridge, wheat biscuits, boiled rice with kidney beans, every single day, and the fact that The Poors are not doing this and complaining about being hungry is proof of their entitlement.
@PsyChuan @futurebird @mekkaokereke
If I'm not mistaken, it was the NYT who published an article about stretching the food budget by having cereal for more meals wasn't it?
It was truly impressive rich people water carrying.

They pay $34 for burgers. Should their fire department service be free? Opening a new fire department in one of NYC's richest neighborhoods has some of America's pettiest journalists asking silly questions in headlines again.

The article acknowledges the fire department analogy, then blows past it.

️The solve for "Sometimes when a service like free childcare is available to all, marginalized communities get squeezed out," is "Address that racism."
It's not "Therefore waste incredible amounts of time and money trying to means test something that society should just make available to all.
"@mekkaokereke I swear there must be some special type of American liberal that if you leave them five minutes alone with the task to implement a very simple socialdemocrat service that is commonplace in the rest of the world, they will misconstrue it in their head so badly that they will come back to you with a reinvention of segregation

@mekkaokereke (this is not specifically only about this article, though it triggered my memory of this phenomenon. I shall never forget the time I saw California renewable energy guy vehemently insist that obviously wheelchairs should not be allowed into walkable cities but that'll be a price worth paying)

"They get paid good money for complaining that consumers of public services don't eat dirt, should journalists be allowed to drive on public roads?" -
Now why exactly is a $34 burger incompatible with having excellent public services your pay for with taxes?
Schools aren't charity operations, this isn't a band-aid for the desperate. It's something people should look from other cities at and say "I wish my city had that"
Drop of your kids and trust they are safe AND learning while you are at work. Pick them up and have a $34 burger AND avocado toast. Let's live well together.
This must scare them to death.

I bet they really think they are riding the wave of hostility towards the ultra-wealthy on this one. What absolutely bad faith reporting. -

"@mekkaokereke excluding the richer people from something like that looks like a sure way to get them to oppose it. They'll end up seing themselves as the ones paying for it and will resent not getting access to it.

@realtegan @mekkaokereke Free school lunches for all is what Democrats and Gov. Walz did in Minnesota.

@chu @futurebird @mekkaokereke i mean it's not really carrying water for them when it IS them, is it. the NYT can afford its own skyscraper, anything editorial is going to be affected by that.

@paul_ipv6 @realtegan @blainecross @mekkaokereke Is there really anything more important on earth than feeding and nurturing our children? Should anyone really care about what it costs? Aren't they all our children, and therefore our future as a species? Never mind whether they're genetically related to us or not, are they not still ours in the most fundamental sense imaginable? What is wrong with these people who only see in them something to constrain, deprive and punish?
@mekkaokereke @Canevecchio @realtegan @paul_ipv6 @blainecross insist that they be born (anti abortion) just so they can be starved later. Another form of abuse and now there’s an endless supply.

@hugoestr @mekkaokereke if it didn’t have holes it would be a social safety blanket!
@hugoestr @mekkaokereke my own joke is making me sad because that actually sounds lovely. “Hey, resident, feel nice and cozy in security from the worst of your needs. Your fellows care enough about you to make sure that you’re provided for” is just better than “We’ll catch you when you fall, it’s terribly likely, sorry about that and all,” which in turn is better than what we actually have…

Insane luxury! Decadence! Especially that bit about the person making the burger having a wage where they too might at times... enjoy a burger.
This is insanity.

@camille @futurebird @mekkaokereke I agree with you, but the flip side is you have to raise taxes broadly on the middle class because of the expense. That's what they do in Scandinavia, but USA federal Democrats are kinda losing their appetite for tax plans that raise taxes not just on the top 0.1%, but the top 20%. The plans from van Hollen and Booker are, sadly, good examples.
We're seeing the consequence of 2024 being the first time in awhile that R's won the working class in the election.

@futurebird @mekkaokereke I dated someone who owned restaurants and they said at the time that their burger at an upscale bistro-- local beef and short rib, locally baked bun, hand-cut fries-- was a loss-leader. They shared with me a video for restaurateurs (that I can't find right now, youtube sucks) that did a break down of what each $1 in a restaurant goes to pay for and how little goes to the owner. She herself worked 80+ hour weeks but the hours of the were smeared from 7am (deliveries!) to 2am (closing everything out). Not a lifestyle business.
I worked back of house, front of house, and as a barista to get through college and university and have opinions on how food service treats people.
