Just canceled my old web store, which was one of these all in one solutions (think Shopify but not Shopify). And it cost $3600 per year. Now running the same store on an open source store software that is better than the paid shop. On a small VPS with 1 core and 8 GB Ram, at a cost of $200 per year.

It is possible to get away from big tech. Just takes a lot of little steps.

Cool, which software do you use now? And what do you sell?

@chrokaki @carstenfranke that's awesome, I would also love to hear what software you're using.

@Infrapink @shom @chrokaki @carstenfranke This thread is worthless without a link to said shop 🙂

@Infrapink @shom @chrokaki I switched to Magento 2, the open source version of Magento Commerce. (Still owned by Adobe, but I am not using their hosting and integration). Lots of add-on modules available from independent programmers. Runs on a VPS by a European provider.
I make a lot of thermocouples, a sort of temperature sensor. For everyone from a hobby potter with a little kiln in the backyard to NASA. A lot for battery labs and EV companies.

@carstenfranke Thank you! I'm definitely looking into this. Interestingly, so far as my low-tech self can tell, it looks like the open source version might even be free from Adobe's ai crap? 👀👀
