    @VE3RWJ

    Dyson must've read @pluralistic's Enshittification, scratched their heads for a while, and come up with a wheeze for regular income from the humble toothbrush

    They've designed their new AI assisted toothbrush so you have to use their products with it. Regular ongoing rental fees to Dyson for as long as you use the toothbrush.

    Why are folk so easily seduced by this nonsense?

    @Cyclist

    Why not just by a bamboo toothbrush!? No rental fees, no vendor app required, works without electricity, and apart from the bristles it can be composted!

      @Cyclist @VE3RWJ @pluralistic not just Enshittification, that's literally the plot of one of the Radicalized short stories. I recommend it if you haven't read them.

      Yesterday I was listening to the Mangez les riches episode about billionnaire bunkers and it was another relevant topic that's the plot of the short stories.

        @Cyclist @VE3RWJ @pluralistic I’m sure somewhere in a secret laboratory deep inside a mountain the best scientist in the world are working on the last unsolved problem of dental hygiene products: how to lock down a toothbrush to only work with certified toothpaste.

        But can it collect data from inside my mouth and sell it to advertizers? Because that's what I really want.

            @Phosphenes obviously. As soon as your toothpaste runs low it will send your dental hygiene data to all partnered toothpaste suppliers and query them for a resupply so it can really provide you with the best integrated experience. It will just charge it to your credit card on file. Trust the process! @Cyclist @VE3RWJ @pluralistic

                @alexadeswift I completely agree for myself, and I do understand the niche it is attempting to fill. Many people don't know how to brush their teeth properly, there are countless way that people mess up. Rather than having a brush that papers over the issues people have with good oral hygiene, we should be focusing on helping people learn to brush their teeth correctly. And that's just for the people who are motivated to brush their teeth

                For the people for whom it's difficult to brush regularly it's even more difficult. This doesn't solve that issue in the slightest

                    But gadgets can be so cool.

                    It's like gambling. If you have ever found a single gadget that made your life better you will chase gadgets for the rest of your life hoping for that magical high... that feeling of technology really making things better and making drudgery vanish again.

                    A few thousand people will buy this and hope that it will do that. Some of them will try to pretend that it worked to avoid recognizing they money they wasted.

                    I get it.

                      I would humbly offer my services as an gadget inventor and builder to such people. I can make you a toothbrush with AI if you want.

                      I don't think it's a good idea, but why not hire one of your local real-life mad scientists instead?

                      We are throwing the plastic and lipo batteries in the landfill either way.
