          I'd be interested in that vertical adapter thingy in the middle that connects the tangle with the green cable. What's it called, and what is its purpose?

            "One cable, any brand, less electronic waste.”

            Per the article @jnfingerle posted, unfortunately that's simply not true

            (See also: https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2024/11/usb-c-is-not-universal/680502/)

            There are multiple types of USB-C cable with different capabilities, and they're not interchangeable. Previously it was obvious that you couldn't plug device-A into power adapter B; now the connection may fail for no obvious reason.

            What's needed now is clear, standardised labeling. It’d be great if you could work on that.

                        @EUCommission Actually, not quite. I still have devices that use micro and mini USB, and there are plenty of devices that require USB-A to USB-C cables for charging. On top of that, devices need different power adapters—5W, 15W, 20W, 35W, or even more. And cables don’t last forever. So, what’s the real advantage?

                                  @mmalc @EUCommission @jnfingerle
                                  Impossible to buy a full USB-C cable in local shops. They are all only wired for USB-2, so no USB-DP, some USB charging modes don't work and no USB-3 speeds.

                                  Also none of my USB-C chargers or PC USB-C port will charge one USB-C device I have, only a USB-A port on PC or charger works.

                                  Some laptop need more than 20W (typical chargers are only 10W!). Some need more than the 100W (high power).
                                  All laptops > 20W should have also a dedicated charge port.

                                    @EUCommission How to tell the difference between charging cables and data transfer cables?

                                    @Purple_Lilith @EUCommission Colour is supposed to help, but it's sadly not standardized very well.

                                      Starting today, USB-C is the mandatory charging standard for all laptops sold in the EU.

                                      It might make sense for phone and small gadgets. USB-C is a disaster for larger tablets, tools and laptops for charging and knowing what functions are supported.

                                      Makers use it as an excuse to have only one or two USB ports (a C and A) on the laptop and one on tablet. A bag of dongles & USB hub. Often unable to charge and use external USB-3 drive or screen.

                                      Good intentions. Stupid implementation, partly because USB-C is a mess..
