Interesting, I live in Europe as well, but my experience is very different. I have a Google-free phone running GrapheneOS and that's it. For banking, I have a small ChipTAN device, and for online payments, I use a FIDO2 token. If a company tried to force me using an app, I'd go somewhere else. Sometimes, you have to ask customer service for a non-app option, but even that is rare.

It is also Visa and MasterCard dependency. Without America I literary can't survive.
My salary goes to my bank account (company don't have to give you cash). And then everything what am I buying needs America. I can't withdraw money without Visa or MC. I can't pay without it.

@michal you cannot, in .CZ, withdraw money from a bank account in person (cash) or with a bank card?

@zool @jpmens At least he acknowledged that it's the only way for him to not use it (seen some less insightful pieces where it was obvious but never stated that things had been offloaded to the spouse), but it would be nice to see one of these where the husband took the proverbial bullet so his wife won't have to be on Meta.

We have just Visa o MC, so authorization is done via american network.From bank i can withdraw, but i must pay fee. If i want more than 100000czk i have make even appointment
Not ideal situation. In Germany they have at least EC card

@jurjen_heeck @hweimer It also means you have the time, mental bandwidth and economical means to push back against the mainstream when you have to, buy the necessary non-Google/Apple devices and so on. To always avoid companies that don't provide options is a privilege not everyone is afforded.
It's more than just being tech savvy. It takes time, energy, money and some privilege to be able to do it.

It's more than just being tech savvy. It takes time, energy, money and some privilege to be able to do it.

@jpmens Graphene OS (https://grapheneos.org/) appears to be the best system to avoid Google and Apple dependencies with a quite secure operating system.
France is actively fighting it because (shuffles papers)... "may protect pedophiles".
