I got sent this really cool project:

It's a game engine for text-based games with a focus on accessibility by making the same interface accessible for everyone. You can play it with a screen reader and get the same experience as a sighted person. And the games are cool!

@drew the text is screaming AI-written to me, but I don't know otherwise. I'm reluctant to do much more than a look inside until that is cleared up.

@drew the closer I look the more it seems like this is someone skirting around Codeberg's anti-ai policy by not pushing any AGENTS.md or similar files 😅

i don't get slop vibe at all from it. it's really tight C code with no dependencies. the docs look very human to me, not the vague waffly AI language. no AI images. and author has a riseup mail. but i'll mail them and ask.

@pelle I could definitely be wrong. It just seems like a lot of the text is not something a person would actually write. For example, why even mention how an old version of the system worked here?

              > What a command is worth is the months it took. Four things used to read the last action you typed — whether you had spent the season on people, on somebody who needed looking after, or on each other. That was fair while a year was four blocks and the last one was a quarter of it. With twelve months it meant a life that spent three months on a failing parent and then went to work was judged to have neglected them, and a childhood got a mark or not depending on which action happened to straddle month three. The months are counted now, so a year with three months of SEE in January is a year with three months of it whatever you did in March.

To me this reads a lot like an agent documenting changes, oblivious to the fact that a normal person would have replaced the docs to just cover the current implementation. The same happens in the text explaining the name of the project.

there is a lot of text, but maybe people who write text-based games just write a lot?

the section about the naming is way too beautifully and intentionally written to be AI:

»So it became Zaytun. An olive tree is slow, it is not much to look at, it is famously hard to kill, and it outlives the person who planted it by centuries — you plant one for somebody you will not meet. That is a fair description of what this project is trying to be: plain text and plain C, no dependencies to rot, a game file you can hand to somebody in ten years and expect to open. It is also a tree that grows where this was written, which the loom was not.«

                  Haha, thanks!

The entire code was written by me — the C code, the JavaScript, everything. No AI wrote the code for me.

But, to be completely honest with you, the handbook and website texts got a LOT of help from local AI. 😂 English isn't my native language, so I used local AI quite a bit to help me write, polish, and organize the documentation and website text.

So I guess the official answer is: human-coded, AI-assisted documentation.
I have absolutely nothing against people using AI to write code. For me, though, I deliberately chose not to use it because I want to keep improving my own knowledge and understanding, and honestly, I'm a afraid that relying on AI too much would make me lazy.
