Do you want help with using Mastodon or the rest of the Fediverse?
-
@FediTips @Armadillosoft It's worth mentioning that Mastodon-compatible messages have a relatively low level of security. Though mostly encrypted in transit they are not end to end encrypted and often unencrypted in servers' databases.
Yup, this is true for DMs on social networks in general.
Sensitive info should only ever be sent through end-to-end dedicated messaging systems rather than social neworks.

@FediTips Do you happen to know any guide or orientation website for new people at peertube? I've created an account but I ended up downloading Freetube to continue watching Youtube since Peertube is kind of hard to understand or to find anything...Thanks!

@FediTips yes
I would like to explore the idea as a non-IT person being able to host a server and an instance of Mastodon.
Is there an article that lets someone know the high level steps and the feasibility of a layman hosting Mastodon?

Yes! I have a whole site dedicated to non-technical people hosting their own online services at https://growyourown.services
There's a section specifically about the Fediverse at https://growyourown.services/grow-your-own-social-network
There's a tutorial for creating your own Mastodon instance at https://growyourown.services/making-your-own-mastodon-server-in-10-steps/
TL:DR - You can use "Managed Hosting" services which do all the technical stuff on your behalf. It doesn't cost much either, about 5 - 10 euros per month depending on the server type.

You would have to use some kind of third party translation service yourself, a separate translation site or app. Some services are integrated into browsers, others would require you to copy-paste text for translation.

@FediTips Are there any good resources for finding and comparing clients? I have tried a few desktop applications, and I have not found one I like. The feature I would most like but have been unable to find is one that remembers which posts I have read.

It's quite a big job to keep up with all the different clients and all their updates. As far as I know there isn't a single resource that does this for all clients.
As almost all clients are free to use or free to try, the best option is usually to just try the latest version yourself.
If you go to https://joinmastodon.org/apps and click on "Desktop" you should see some good desktop apps to try out. Hopefully some of these are new to you?

Non technical person here.
When I switched accounts, I tried doing it on my own first. I got stuck on some steps/terms I didn't understand.I reached out to @feditips and they helped me immediately.
Made it simple and easy and quick.

Yeah, if they don't have a particular type of domain on one provider you may well find it elsewhere.
