Mastodon / Fediverse question.
-
As far as I can tell the Live Feeds menu item is still there both on the release version and the prototype "nightly" version.
It's possible they are trying something out on your server mastodon.online as it's owned by the software developers (as is mastodon.social).
Thanks. I guess I could email the admin of mastodon.online.
Another detail: On my mobile app, the tabs are there for switching timelines, but there is no content.

Yeah, probably best to ask your admin. They do often experiment with stuff on those two servers because they belong to them, which means sometimes you see stuff early but also sometimes stuff breaks.

Mastodon / Fediverse question.
Home, Local, and Global (Federated) Timelines. Did those options disappear?
On the desktop version of Mastodon, there used to be (as of 2 days ago) a menu item, "Live Feeds," to choose which feed to browse. Now it's not there.

Here’s the response from the admin:
“We are actually planning to disable the "live feeds" functionality on both mastodon.social and mastodon.online as it generally provides a poor method of discovering good posts and often has a lot of spam. (It's a new feature so we're testing it at the moment on mastodon.online.)”
My comment would be: It’s interesting to say that removing something is a “new feature.”

Thanks for passing that on, interesting!
To be fair, mastodon.social is way way too large, not surprised that they find these features unmanageable
The live feeds are designed for a decentralised network where people are spread out on lots of reasonably sized servers rather than a supergiant.Hopefully this is just an option for an admin to switch them off if they want to rather than remove them from every server.

I’m thinking that this will motivate me to go to a smaller server.
Here’s the other part of the email (I ran out of characters before):
“We do have the ability to opt people back into it, but we would like to understand how people still use it if they do need access to it again.”

Good luck with it
If you need any help, feel free to ask. I've done a step-by-step guide for moving at https://fedi.tips/transferring-your-mastodon-account-to-another-server
