Are there certain accounts you particularly enjoy, and you don't want to miss any of their posts?

You can make sure you notice all their posts by clicking the 🔔 bell icon on their profile page. (If you can't see a bell, log in through your server's website and click their profile bell that way.)

Their posts will all appear in your timeline as usual, but you will also get notifications about their posts too. More info and questions answered in the guide:

        wow thanks!
        i haven’t noticed that bell despite it’s too obvious…

and i’ve been wondering a few times already why i rarely see posts from some accounts by their own posts - i see them being reposted by others, go to their account to follow them, and see i already do and that they post quite regularly but it’s not getting into my feed

If you're following them, their posts should all be on your feed. It might be worth following up if a post is missing from your feed?

The most common reason people don't notice posts in their feed is simply because Mastodon deliberately shows all the posts from everyone you follow, so people may have a lot of posts flowing through their feeds.

it’s all chronological as far as i see so it could just be im awake at different times… snd also i might follow too many accounts and hashtags already…

actually… algorithms might not be such a bad idea as we think because the big players misused them for their own interests…

really making algos that help me see everything that’s important to me would be nice

The problem with algorithms is that it would require the platform to spy on you by keeping track of what you're doing, so there would be a risk to your privacy. It would also allow the platform to manipulate what you're seeing. The idea of not using algorithms is to protect people's privacy and prevent them being manipulated by making it impossible.

Having said that, there are many different ways you can customise your timeline so it's more manageable: https://fedi.tips/does-mastodon-and-the-fediverse-use-algorithms-does-it-start-pushing-stuff-at-me-based-on-my-interactions/

to my understanding this is technically incorrect.

an algorithm can even be a static calculation method and does not necessarily require „watching“ me.

it could just be „fill most of the feed by whatever is posted right now by people the user follows in chronological order, but every 5th post display sprinkle a random post from at least 1h ago to max 10h ago“
                    that’s an algorithm.

for that matter, even „chronological order“ is actually an algorithm…

Well, if you specifically want it show stuff important to you personally, that would need to monitor you in some way 🙂

In computer science algorithm means almost anything on a computer, but most people don't use the word in that way. They usually use it to mean a feed that moves stuff around, hides stuff or pushes stuff in an opaque way.
