Interesting in more than one way:
ITK (#Aarhus Municipality's department for Innovation, Technology and Creativity, together with Culture and Citizen Services in Aarhus Municipality, are moving their #cloud hosting from #Azure to Hetzner.
In addition to making the necessary move from the #US to #Europe, this will "reduce cloud costs by as much as 2/3."#sovereignity

Continuing the thread -
Moving relatively simple generic services such as file hosting, buckets etc. is somewhat easy.
A bigger challenge: to get away from the entire #Microsoft environment, the entire #Outlook+Office+Teams+::: package, and such integrated systems.
In #Denmark we are unfortunately very used to it- a dependency/addiction grown over years/decades, which will be harder to undo,#sovereignity

#LeaveMicrosoft@sebastian @floe You forgot Windows itself. So many people that see the issues with US dependencies just don't think big enough or in the context of what sureptitiois actions Microsoft might be compelled to take by the Trump regime. People are still not thinking in terms of "What if Trump actually starts a war?"

@Infoseepage @floe
I fully agree. We should #LeaveWindows as part of #LeaveMicrosoft. -

#LeaveMicrosoft@sebastian @AndrzejWasowski When I was at Roskilde Tekniske Gymnasium in 2010 we (the MediaLab) were hosting many of these things in-house, literally, in the school basement. By the time my professor retired and I lost touch with what was going on around 2016, the IT department had sown enough fear with leadership that it was all shut down and the school could finally rest easily knowing everything was in the safe hands of Microsoft… what a farce.

@philip @sebastian I heard a competent university employee saying this week that Microsoft gives better security than open source. And it does, but only from the legal perspective. What institutions buy (or what they think they buy) is delegation of legal responsibility to Microsoft. Also known as an "ass protection", pardon my French.

Picking up this sleeping thread after an absence - agreeing with what both of you said -
of course it is possible and advisable for an organisation with IT competence to host their own services, which does not necessarily have to mean "metal on own premises", but by all means "outside the paralyzing grip of #Microsoft and other #USCorps".
There are plenty of flexible in/outsourcing constellations feasible. -

There are plenty of flexible in/outsourcing constellations feasible.The problem lies in fact in having the competence - years of FUD, management gaslighting and #Microsoft-sponsored red wine have not left much of that behind in many danish companies and institutions.
Under the new political landscape, with the US de-facto compromised on political and business levels,
the task of rebuilding this competence needs to be taken on. -
