@catsalad @briankrebs @masek I've been hard on myself for getting rid of these. Especially as I've had some circumstances where I couldn't find the right cable in the big box of cables, so ended up buying one.
If I can get it on Amazon with next day or same day delivery and I'm not actively using it, then it goes in the bin.

@briankrebs @masek I once threw away a cable I never thought I use, and then the very next month I needed it!!!

@catsalad @briankrebs @masek Guy I know asked me if I had an adapter he could use with his device, so I rummaged in my bag of cords and adapters and came up with one that would work and also had his name on it. (He'd added it to my collection meant to go for recycling about a year earlier.)

@masek Sowas dachte ich auch, bis der VGA auf HDMI-Adapter nicht an dem Secondhand Serverboard funktioniert hat, und ich dann arg tricksen musste. Wobei dann der Monitor das nächste Problem war, gut dass ich mit dem Sperrmüll da gewartet hatte.

I recognize myself, but kinda wonder if this is a similar pattern to what I noticed with my grandparents (and many of their generation). With them, it came from having experienced periods of extreme scarcity where stuff wasn't generally available. Keep what you have, fix what you have before replacing it, keep broken stuff with parts that might become a spare for something else. Often neatly tucked away and labelled "pieces of string too short to be useful".
For the tech generation, we've experienced buying good gear at significant cost. Cabling has always been a challenge. When I replace stuff, there's often this idea that "I'll be able to use this for something later" then never do. I often ascribe a higher value than what is warranted to once loved objects. (Also, you feel vindicated every time a new device arrives with a 20cm long power cable.)

a serial killer dubbed the USB strangler is just around the corner, but the possibly suspects are way too many to narrow down the number -
I still have VGA cables. Civilizations have risen and fallen since they were last useful, but somehow they remain under my desk, quietly waiting for history to repeat itself.
