The author of @allaboutberlin on how Google AI Overviews are killing independent web publishing, citing a 70% drop in traffic after seven years of steady growth. His work trains the model. The model is replacing his site. There is no credit, clicks, or revenue. This is what the "enshittification" of the open web looks like in practice.

Hard to imagine moving to Berlin without stumbling upon his guides at some point.

@everton137 @allaboutberlin It's definitely going to be an "experience", what happens in a few years when most people stop making content.

Will we (consumers) even notice if slop is training slop?
Or will we see start seeing a pushback from normal folk against the AI-hypers?

I cannot even see any benefit to try and create a "new", human based/link directory network again (like the old web), because [they] will just scan that and destroy it as well, unless it really becomes popular and consumers have left the bad actors entirely behind.
    E.g. no-google.

Real physical books could be a thing again, but they'll scan them and again, unless consumers have left the services, we're back to square one.

It does look bleak, very bleak, and I struggle finding any sort of light in the dark.

@everton137 @allaboutberlin We need a reversion to link circles (can’t remember what they’re called) before search existed. People just including other sites to visit at the bottom of their pages.

@ayl @everton137 @allaboutberlin There are two ways to find information: searching and browsing. Browsing used to be the default, which is why web programs are called "browsers." I miss those days, and would be happy to have them back. The one big site that's still browsing-friendly is Wikipedia.

@svelmoe @everton137 @allaboutberlin You forgot the part where they made everyone invested through their big IPOs, making everyone a bag holder - ready for the rug pull - while they run away laughing when the economy turns. And then, instead of having them go bust, we must bail them out - let people lose their retirements etc. But, enjoy the weekend.

Google is shooting itself in the foot. For one thing, no tracking or ad impressions are generated on websites. Additionaly, other search engines will likely start to gain ground.

@everton137 @allaboutberlin Thing is, I would be prepared to bet it's _not_ being trained on their site specifically. I bet it's a generically trained LLM that is live querying Google's cache of their website and "summarising" it (and other related content). In other words, it would bypass the debate about training and copyright. It could be incontrovertibly live copyright infringement.

The author of @allaboutberlin on how Google AI Overviews are killing independent web publishing, citing a 70% drop in traffic after seven years of steady growth. His work trains the model. The model is replacing his site. There is no credit, clicks, or revenue. This is what the "enshittification" of the open web looks like in practice.

or maybe, people will start distribute their work in a non-indexable channel, like email newsletter, or more.

@NatureMC I think to wait for the politicians to act would be a mistake. We should start to poison their LLMs on a large scale.

Google is shooting itself in the foot. For one thing, no tracking or ad impressions are generated on websites. Additionaly, other search engines will likely start to gain ground.
